Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Darkwood Photography.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My wife and I have been part of the alternative community for a while. She has a background in theater and acting and did some modeling with friends of ours. Due in part to the work she was creating, I decided to pick up a camera. Through a process of intense discovery, I worked with her and others to develop the “Darkwood” brand – which is tasteful, artistic, yet alluring and edgy.
Please tell us about your art.
My art is people, but because I have a background in storytelling, I’m always looking for ways to do more than just take a picture of a person. I use locations, lighting, and creative editing to add tension or other creative elements to a picture. Sometimes a piece will take me hours of editing; the process of removing and adding effects and layers, as well as custom-textures, can be a real journey of discovery and is a big part of the fun.
In many of the pieces that we’re most proud of, there are hundreds of small adjustments and alterations. In some of those pieces, we’ve layered on textures that we’ve captured from around the world to create a deeper narrative that no one (besides us) will probably ever know.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Financing is always difficult. In some cases, we’ve created art that caters to specific tastes in order to sell and continue to fund our work and to pay the talent that we work with. We don’t have any best practices other than the standard ones: charge a fair rate for your work, network constantly, and work to create art that reflects your values but also motivates people to open their wallets.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can find many examples of our work on Instagram. It’s basically our portfolio. We also have a website (www.darkwoodphotography.com) where we have some art prints available. You can support us by purchasing prints, commissioning custom pieces, hiring our services, or reaching out and sponsoring some of our events.
