Today we’d like to introduce you to Aleisha Grimsley.
Hi Aleisha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey into content creation and freelance social media management around the end of 2023. What began as a late-night idea in my dorm at 3:00 am quickly turned into something much bigger than I had initially imagined. At the time, I was on a nursing track, but I realized that path no longer aligned with who I was becoming or the direction I saw for my future. Letting go of that wasn’t easy, but it opened the door for me to fully explore my creative side.
During that transition, I discovered a real passion for content creation, branding, and digital storytelling. I became more intentional about developing my skills, experimenting with content, and understanding how social media can be used as a powerful marketing tool. That led me to make a major decision. I changed my major to marketing so I could align my education with my growing interests and long-term goals.
From there, everything started to shift. I began attending networking events around the city, putting myself in rooms with creatives, marketers, and brand founders. Those connections helped me grow both personally and professionally, and I started gaining recognition from major brands. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work with companies and organizations like Good Molecules, Blavity, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, Adobe, Capital One, Netflix, and many more to come.
Alongside brand work, I’ve also had the chance to be in creative spaces and work closely with artists I admire, including Key Glock, Ken the Man, Teyana Taylor, Metro Boomin, and others. Those experiences have shown me just how far creativity and consistency can take you when you trust your vision and stay committed to your growth.
Looking back, everything started with a simple decision to listen to myself and pivot. My biggest advice to any young woman considering a change in direction is to trust yourself and take the leap. You won’t regret betting on your own potential.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. While things have been exciting and rewarding, the journey has also come with a lot of uncertainty, self-doubt, and adjustment.
One of my biggest struggles was the transition itself, moving away from nursing and into marketing and content creation. It wasn’t just a major change academically, but also emotionally. I had to unlearn the idea that I had to follow a “traditional” or stable path, and instead trust something that didn’t feel fully guaranteed at the time.
Another challenge was starting from scratch in a new industry without a clear roadmap. When I first began creating content and freelancing, I had to teach myself everything. From understanding branding and strategy to learning how to pitch myself to brands. There were moments where I questioned if I was good enough or if I was moving too slowly compared to others already established in the space.
Consistency was also something I had to work through. Balancing school, networking, content creation, and building a personal brand wasn’t always easy, especially when results weren’t immediate. There were times when opportunities felt delayed, or I felt overlooked, even after putting in a lot of effort behind the scenes.
On top of that, I had to get comfortable with putting myself out there. Sharing my work publicly, attending networking events alone, and introducing myself to people in rooms where I didn’t know anyone all pushed me out of my comfort zone.
But through all of that, those challenges became part of what shaped me. They forced me to become more disciplined, confident, and intentional about my goals. Even though it hasn’t been smooth, every obstacle has played a role in getting me to where I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
LayDesignedIt is a creative digital marketing and content creation brand focused on helping businesses and personal brands elevate their online presence through intentional storytelling, aesthetic-driven content, and strategic social media management.
At its core, LayDesignedIt was built from my passion for creativity, branding, and helping brands not only show up online, but stand out. I specialize in content creation, social media strategy, and digital storytelling that connect brands to real audiences authentically and engagingly.
What I’m most known for is my ability to blend creativity with strategy. I don’t just create content for aesthetics. I create with purpose. Every piece of content is designed to align with a brand’s identity, speak directly to its target audience, and support real growth and engagement across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and beyond.
What sets me apart is my perspective as both a creative and a strategist. I understand trends and visuals, but I also focus heavily on brand voice, audience behavior, and consistency. I also bring a very hands-on, personalized approach to every project, making sure each client feels like their brand is being treated with intention rather than a “one-size-fits-all” method.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how organically my brand has grown. From an idea I had in my dorm room to working with major brands and organizations such as Good Molecules, Blavity, Adobe, Capital One, Netflix, and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. I’m also proud of the creative spaces I’ve been able to step into, including working alongside artists like Key Glock, Ken The Man, Teyana Taylor, and Metro Boomin. These experiences have reinforced that I’m building something that exists in both culture and industry spaces.
Through LayDesignedIt, I offer content creation, social media management, branding support, and digital strategy services for businesses, creatives, and personal brands looking to elevate their online presence.
What I want readers to know most is that LayDesignedIt is rooted in growth, storytelling, and intention. It’s not just about making content. It’s about building brands that feel real, memorable, and impactful.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I rely heavily on tools like Canva for design and content creation, CapCut for short-form video editing, and Adobe Creative Suite for more advanced branding and visual work. I also use ChatGPT for brainstorming ideas, refining captions, and helping me stay consistent with content strategy. On the organization side, tools like HubSpot and Google Calendar help me manage content planning, deadlines, and client work so everything stays structured and intentional.
