Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexander King.
Hi Alexander, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey as a filmmaker began with a deep love for storytelling, a fascination with the art of visual communication, and the lack of seeing people who look like me in film. As a black queer lesbian, it was important that I created a world where proper representation is the goal. Changing the narrative means creating and educating by creating stories that we can connect with.
My early experiences were both challenging and rewarding, as they exposed me to the gritty reality of filmmaking, from long hours on set to tight budgets and creative problem-solving.
As I gained more experience, I began to focus on developing my unique style and voice as a filmmaker. I directed and produced short films and a series called Queerious, which explores a range of themes and genres, from thought-provoking life experiences to immersive visual storytelling. Each project allowed me to experiment with different techniques and narrative structures, helping me evolve as an artist.
One of the pivotal moments in my career was my most recent project called Keep Me In Mind co-produced by Keke Palmer and KeyTV. I was also invited to be a part of GLAAD’s Inaugural Class for New Equity in Media and Entertainment Initiative.
Throughout my journey, I’ve been dedicated to pushing the boundaries of storytelling through the use of innovative technology and creative techniques.
Today, I am proud to be a filmmaker with a diverse portfolio of work that spans various genres and mediums. I am continually inspired by the ever-evolving landscape of filmmaking, and I look forward to exploring new horizons in storytelling, collaborating with talented individuals, and sharing my passion for film with audiences around the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey as a filmmaker has certainly been a rewarding one, but it hasn’t been without its share of obstacles and challenges:
Financial Challenges: Independent filmmaking often involves tight budgets and limited resources. Securing funding for projects, especially in the early stages of my career, was a significant challenge. I had to be resourceful and creative in finding funding sources, such as crowdfunding campaigns and grants, to bring my ideas to life.
Logistical Complexities: Filmmaking involves intricate logistics, from coordinating schedules and locations to managing a cast and crew. Unexpected issues can arise during production, such as bad weather or technical failures, which can disrupt the shooting schedule and increase stress levels.
Distribution Challenges: Once a film is completed, getting it seen by a wider audience can be another significant hurdle. Navigating the distribution landscape, whether through festivals, streaming platforms, or theatrical releases, comes with its own set of challenges and complexities.
Despite these challenges, I believe that overcoming obstacles is an integral part of any creative journey. Each challenge I’ve faced has provided an opportunity for growth, learning, and the development of resilience. The passion for filmmaking and the desire to share compelling stories with the world have been powerful motivators to navigate these challenges and continue on this fulfilling path.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
