Meet Alexis Crane

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Crane.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I got my start in tattooing when I was 19 years old, at a tattoo shop in ballground Georgia. My mentor, Chris Collet, taught me everything I know about tattooing. I was fortunate to have a very rewarding apprenticeship, and my style of tattooing has grown from there. Growing up I often times turned to art for equanimity, so it was no surprise to me when I fell in love with tattooing and its wonderful community.

Please tell us about your art.
Although the style of tattooing that I do has been called many things, the most common is “kawaii”, which means cute or adorable in Japanese. I take inspiration from many things: TV shows, movies, books, manga, anime, cartoons, and pop culture… but my favorite source of inspiration is definitely Japan and Japanese culture! Above all, I love making people happy- and who can be upset while getting a kawaii tattoo?

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
I think the biggest challenge for most artists today is sadly that some don’t understand that tattooing is our livelihood, it’s how we pay our bills, and feed our families. We depend on our clients to come to their appointments, and show up on time. While most artists are very accommodating and understanding of emergencies, there are still times where some clients can’t be bothered to let us know they can’t make it. I am always happy to work with a client to the best of my ability, but no shows don’t give the artist the ability to find a replacement appointment.
