Today we’d like to introduce you to Ant Oxley.
Ant, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As former college athletes, sports brought my wife Lauren and I together and we always dreamed of owning a gym. We both played team sports and so we fell in love with the team and community atmosphere of CrossFit. There are some great neighborhoods in Atlanta, but we were drawn to Grant Park because it has a small town feel and is 5 minutes from all the action in ATL.
We found our first house and just a 5 minute walk away from the perfect location for a CrossFit Gym. Right across the street from Eventide Brewery, a few feet from the future Southside Trail of the Beltline, and in a developing area of Grant Park thanks to Philippe Pellerin from Pellerin Real Estate.
We started in the tiny park known as Ormond-Grant Park offering free park workouts to a handful of people, but after just a couple of months we had developed an awesome following and when we opened the doors we had 40 members sign up on the first day.
Lauren was still working a corporate job for the first few months we were open, but due to the growth of the gym she had to make the decision whether we should hire someone or she would leave her job. In the end, it was a no-brainer and since she left she has never looked back.
Over the past 16 months, we have put our heart and souls into OxFit and thanks to our amazing members today we have a thriving community.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The past year has without doubt been the hardest, but the most rewarding year of our lives. For 12 months we worked 18-20 hours per day, we have gone through legal battles, we have faced financial struggles and even though we spent all our time in the gym it took quite a toll on our health and fitness.
However, going through all these things shows you what you are made of. We now feel like together we can face any obstacle and as long as we are willing to work hard, we will find a way through.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the OxFit story. Tell us more about the business.
We opened as CrossFit Grant Street and offered strictly CrossFit Classes, however as the business grew we started to do more Personal Training and also Bootcamp Style classes, we also offer Nutritional Coaching and we have Sports Teams a Running Club and many other community programs.
This is why we rebranded to OxFit, we are not just a gym. We are not just for “Elite” athletes and while we may not be for everyone, but we are certainly for anyone who has the right attitude, who is looking to get in the best shape of their lives, but more importantly leaves the gym happier than when they came in. We guarantee to be the best part of our clients day. There are many businesses these days throwing around the word “Community” simply because they have a group of people, but we are much more than that, we are a FAMILY.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We have been very lucky to have people believe in us and have amazing clients join the gym. However, we believe in business and in life, you make your own luck. Everyone has a million ideas, but when you execute and work hard, amazing things start to happen.
