Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Stokes.
Anthony, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started tattooing a little more than eight years ago at a little street shop in Kennesaw. I spent about a year there building a foundation doing crappy wall flash tattoos. I didn’t have a conventional apprenticeship. So I wasn’t very Goodall the beginning. I started working on skin way before I was ready due to the corrupt nature of the shop I started in. But with years of hard work and working in so many different shops with so many different artists I got to where I’m at today. I still have tons of growing and learning to do but I am happy with the progress I’ve made so far,
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely not. I’ve dealt with drug addiction and dealt with my fair share of addicts and thieves along the way. Had a lot of my equipment stolen at one point. And for a while, I was criticized by other artists because of how I got into tattooing. But you have to break free from all that crap and press on for the betterment of your career. So that’s what I’ve done and will continue to do.
Please tell us about Equinox Art Collective.
My business is my work and I judge the success of that by the quality of the work I produce. I am proud to be where I am today despite all the people who want to do nothing but bring me down. I am very excited to be on the track I’m on and can’t wait to see what the future holds for both myself and my artwork. I specialize in anime, comic book, illustrative and cartoony tattooing. I love tattooing characters from old vintage cartoons and from other shows and fandoms I grew up loving. I believe the thing that sets me apart from others is that I’m not trying to prove myself to anyone but myself. I try to keep my ego to a minimum which is pretty uncommon in the skindustry. I’m often told by clients that I am very easy to get along with and that I make them very comfortable even though when they walk in the shop, most people are pretty anxious. And a lot of them have even had iffy experiences with other artists but I try to be as friendly and down to earth as possible and that seems to be working.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think the road that I took even though it was very difficult, was the right one for me. I never expected to be where I am but I’m happy to be there. I may not have made it this far starting out differently than I did. It was tough but I proved that I can do it and that’s good enough for me!
