Today we’d like to introduce you to April Sawyer.
Hi April, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Sistas Loc’d actually came about after speaking to my mother and youngest sister, Emily. My mother who is always filled with bright ideas suggested that Emily and I collaborate and create something great. We were not sure what, but eventually decided to create an apparel brand highlighting and representing those who have locs. Sistas Loc’d is who we are; two biological sisters who have locs. That’s how we came up with our brand. We started our business officially January 2021. We spent countless days and nights creating new ideas with the objective to dismantle myths about locs and show others how to love their hair and themselves. As Sistas Loc’d grew, we knew how important it was to have representation in our brand. Although we still have shirts catered to those who have locs, we wanted to expand our message of self-love, self-care, forgiveness and healing to everyone. We wanted our brand to exemplify culture, mental health and entrepreneurship. We now offer this and so much more. It has been a great journey filled with hard work, dedication, trials, love and support from family, friends and supporters everywhere. We are forever grateful.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am very transparent. There were moments where I (April) struggled with wanting give up. This happened when we didn’t have sales or if I was exhausted from my full-time job. Emily has always been supportive in pushing me to not give up and instead use the energy to create new designs. This journey has NOT been easy. Your brand…your company is your baby so you want things to go well. We put blood, sweat and tears into this. The positive points in this is the knowledge you gain from being an entrepreneur. I’ve learned that it takes support, time, effort and consistency to run a business.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Outside of being an entrepreneur, I work in mental health and I have for ten years. I love what I do and I am hopeful that I can combine everything that I am most passionate about. I am proud of myself, my family and friends. If you only knew where we come from. We weren’t supposed to make it out of high school.
Any big plans?
I have some goals to complete and knew endeavors that I plan to begin. I will not say much about them. Make sure you subscribe to my website to receive updates.
