Today we’d like to introduce you to Asia Lewis.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Asia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Jacksonville, North Carolina and have lived in four different states since. Currently, I reside in Decatur, Georgia. I grew up watching classic Nickelodeon cartoons including cat dogs, Rugrats, rocket power and Spongebob. In elementary school, I started drawing my Bratz Dolls mostly inspired by their fashion, And I was very intrigued by Lisa Franks use of color. My parents were creatives and encouraged me to pursue my dreams to be an artist. Now I attend Savannah College of Art and Design as a senior and I’ll graduate in 2020 with my bachelor’s degree in illustration.
Has it been a smooth road?
I started drawing and taking it seriously back in 2015. So when I look back on the last four years, I feel like it was a pretty smooth road. But there were moments when my style was evolving and changing, which it’s currently undergoing, and these are the times where it can really feel like a struggle, especially if you’re not in the right mindset. But now I’m truly starting to understand to embrace the journey and not trying to skip straight to the destination.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Polite Pastel – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a freelance illustrator specializing in editorial, surface design and hand lettering. I also dabble a little in motion media and enjoy animating some of my illustrations. My work is recognizable by a bold color pallet, which includes greens, magentas, blues and yellows. Ethnic characters, repeated patterns, and motifs come up a lot in my work as well. I’m most proud of my diverse skillset and I believe that plays a significant role in setting myself apart from other artist. I also love when my art has a tactile element added to it once it’s printed. I feel like it allows the viewer to be immersed in my work.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love best about ATL is it’s one of the number one to make connections with industry professionals and very talented and friendly people. What I like the least is the traffic. If it takes more than 20 mins or its in the middle of rush hour traffic, I’m not going lol.
