Meet Avunna Jennings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Avunna Jennings.

Hi Avunna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At a young age, I’ve always been fascinating with music. I would listen to Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Etta James and Otis Redding. It wasn’t until I was 13 years old that I discovered my voice. I was sitting home when I ran into my mother’s room to sing her a song I had written called “Love is a Season.” It was in this moment that my music career began. As time continues, my voice would be remembered by my peers all throughout my school years. I had the opportunity to perform at “The Gift” by Mcdonald’s, Clayton’s County, Who got talent? and more. I was determined to follow my dreams, but when the reality of growing up in a single mother home the struggles that came with it, I began to drift more from my dream. After graduating high school, I decided to go to Valdosta State University, where I majored in nursing.

During my college years, I continued to perform, making a name for myself as Vunna J the performer. I joined an organization called “Media Arts Geniuses,” where I continued to grow and mature musically. However, I began to distance myself from certain activities as the nursing program became more intense. I was accepted into the nursing program, but when more challenges to come, I began to stop performing. I had made up my mind that music was just a dream and nursing would keep my financially stable, but God has other plans for me. In 2019, my life would change forever. After going through a breakup with my long-term college boyfriend of five years, I became distracted and ended up failing the nursing program with just one year left of completion. I was devastated and entered a season of depression. The plan I has made for myself had fallen apart and I felt so lost. I would stay in my room, miss class and even distance myself from friends. During this time, I had begun to start back singing to get me through, whether it was gospel or R&B, me singing my heart out helped pulled me through. Months later, I would meet Barri B, who is my engineer, and record my first single, “Pull Up,” that I had written for fun. After receiving so much feedback from people, I continued to write and released my first project on all major platforms called “ A Millennial Lovestory,” and the rest has been history.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I struggled with depression, insecurities, and even financial stability.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a singer/songwriter. I sing and write R&B music. I am most proud of my writing skills. I think what sets me apart is that I am very versatile with my writing skills.

What’s next?
My plans for the future is to continue to write more music and build my marketing team to expand my audience. One thing I’ve discovered with chasing after your music career, Marketing is key, so I plan to continue to work on this. I will be releasing two singles at the end of March.
