Meet Becky Fried of Becky Fried Art in Woodstock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Fried.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Art is my first love and second career. I started as a child with coloring books, pencil, and ink drawing. Inspired by my high school art teacher at the age of 15 I began painting with acrylic paint. I continued painting during my twenties while building a career in computer and financial services. I loved painting landscapes and waterscapes. Most of my pieces were gifts, although some were sold.

I married, moved to another state, and had two daughters in my late twenties and early thirties. I concentrated on building my business career and did not pick up a brush for over ten years. Once my children became adolescents, I was fortunate enough to work part-time before eventually becoming a stay at home mother. Although I did not paint, I volunteered for all of the “art related” school projects.

In 2004, I reentered the art world by taking a weekly landscape painting class. The instructor introduced me to painting with oils and I learned an enormous amount about the craft, including complementary color harmony. In 2007, I began volunteering at a Buckhead Atlanta non-profit Art Center. Over the next few years, I became the gallery manager and then the program chairperson. Working with academic and “working artist” professionals furthered my art education. In 2008 I opened “Becky Fried Art” and set up a studio in Midtown Atlanta. In 2012, I brought my business to Woodstock.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I had lifestyle changes and family medical issues during the beginning of my art career but I used these challenges to measure my true commitment to my work. Being self-employed presented adjustments and challenges as well.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Becky Fried Art story. Tell us more about the business.
“Becky Fried Art” is in the business of selling fine art and folk art to both individual clients and art galleries/frame shops. I am represented by Ocmulgee Arts, Inc., Macon, Georgia and by Fred Reed Picture Framing, Inc., Atlanta, Georgia, (Miami Circle Arts District).

I create fine art and folk art using diverse media including acrylic paint, oil paint, collage, poly resin, and fabric. My subject matter is primarily landscapes. I have collections of abstract, butterfly, floral and figurative paintings, ink drawings and mixed media. One of my ink drawings was featured on a CD cover. My canvas might be a traditional canvas or a pegboard or a whiskey barrel or an old window or a door. I have used blue jeans as a canvas and am currently crafting an abstract painting on a wedding dress.

I am most proud of creating fine art. I’m excited to know my work is enjoyed in corporate, government and residential collections in the United States, US Virgin Islands, and France.

What sets me apart?
My strong communication skills and a keen natural sense of design balance. These gifts allow me to see with someone else’s eyes, to balance negative and positive space and most importantly to create a painting my client will love.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Good luck and perseverance enhance the success of my life and business.

I define success as creating fine art that enhances the visual, emotional and spiritual desires of my clients; I derive the most pleasure from the “creating of, “ not necessarily the creation. Also, I am able to choose to work with outstanding gallery representatives and clients.

I measure my success in the days/weeks/months that I have created and continue to create art. I waited a long time for this opportunity.
