Meet Brandon Butler of Butter ATL in Old Fourth Ward

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Butler.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Butter.ATL is an Atlanta focused media company. We create social media content about all things Atlanta culture. Our definition of culture is “people like us do things like this.”

Butter was founded in 2018 with the idea that Atlanta drives/creates culture but doesn’t do a great job of telling its own stories. Cities like New York, LA, and Chicago have a culture that can often be quickly identified but Atlanta’s does not because it includes so many things.

We were created after the proliferation of social media and mobile devices so people need to ask themselves what would a media outlet look like if it was founded after the (slow) death of print media. Butter is cultural content targeting today’s mobile-savvy user.

Our key team members include Mobs Robertson (Managing Editor), Nick Fisch (Video Content Lead), Amanda Schrembeck (Art Direction), Jamal Harris (Project Management) and myself (Executive Producer). The Diverse core team, with the support of many other Atlanta creatives and contributors, “churns” out weekly content about Atlanta.

In the coming months and years, we plan to release more great Atlanta content on a more frequent basis. We also plan to continue growing and expanding our other platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter to reach our audience. We will continue to create original content and look into longer form engaging video content native to each platform. Our goal is to become one of the go-to channels for all-things Atlanta culture and content.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course, not. 🙂

Some challenges have included:
– People not understanding what Butter actually does.
– Trying to find the right tone/content for the team to focus on.
– Managing a growing team and growing awareness.
– Working to keep an authentic view on Atlanta culture.
– Getting exclusive access to influencers and events.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Butter.ATL story. Tell us more about the business.
Butter creates hyper-focused social content about Atlanta culture.

We are a media company, not just an Instagram channel, and we believe all brands should act like media companies. We’re known for our beautiful, seamless “never-ending” Atlanta centric Instagram feed. And what sets us apart is our content-focused approach to story-telling.

We’re most proud of our ability to tell the story of Atlanta’s culture with high-quality, intentional content.

Butter a has a full-time team dedicated to churning out daily content, including weekly issues that cover topics in a graphic “infinite scroll” design on Instagram, the most relevant and compelling platform for launching the content, which includes illustrations, video, graphic design, and interviews that capture the essence of Atlanta.

While Instagram is our first channel, we also have thriving communities on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and LinkedIn. We create original, serialized content with Atlanta residents in mind.
