Meet Bria Phifer of Phoenix Tresses

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bria Phifer.

Bria, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started playing in the hair around eight my mom couldn’t do my sister and I’s hair… I mean, she could but not how I liked it lol Anyways between both of my parents, they were always saying I should do hair for a living. I’d do everyone’s hair from the time high school started and ended.

After I had my daughter in 2017, I wanted to find something I would enjoy as a career and something kept taking me back to cosmetology. In November 2018, my Husband, Quinton and I were having a conversation about me going to cosmetology school to pursue my cosmetology license. So December 2018, I did all my paperwork and started cosmetology school at Paul Mitchell in Charlotte in January 2019. Graduated school that same year in December and started working in a salon and at a dry bar and then COVID happened and I decided to take a leap of faith and venture out on my own into my own space. That’s really when Phoenix Tresses took off.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Yes, and no… yes because this is absolutely what I was made to do… making people feel beautiful. However, it hasn’t been easy. Nothing about being a business owner is easy; however, it’s so rewarding working for yourself. I wouldn’t change a thing. I appreciate every high and every single low because it’s making me grateful for those highs.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Phoenix Tresses story. Tell us more about the business.
Phoenix Tresses is my baby. I came up with the name before I even went to cosmetology school. At the time, I was constructing wig units for myself after having my daughter because, due to postpartum shedding, my hair was thinning badly. So I would make the wigs to kind of gain my confidence back. Joking with my Husband one day, I was stating how, when I wear a new wig, it’s the rebirth of a new Bria each time. So then the name Phoenix Tresses came about. Phoenix’s rise from the ashes like a rebirth and then, of course, tresses means hair, lol.

I specialize specifically in healthy hair and color. I cater to all hair types. I don’t want to limit my capabilities to just one hair texture. I think the number one thing I’m most proud of is my authenticity and overall being humble. I like connecting with each guest and giving them my undivided attention so that they know it is all about them and not about the next dollar. I love seeing each guest get up out of the chair and love their hair. The thing that sets me apart is my personality and knowledge. While yes, I’m knowledgeable, I like to inform guests and let them know about the process and just… include them with the experience.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck… lol… luck has been able to give me a great opportunity to show my talent and still be able to provide for my family while having fun. I genuinely enjoy what I do and I think that’s the luckiest thing ever. A lot of people don’t enjoy what they do for a living. I also want to add I have a pretty amazing support system from friends to family. My Husband, Quinton and our Daughter, Jaycen, are my two biggest supporters.
