Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooklyn Jones
Hi BROOKLYN, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey began in 2021, during my second semester at Tennessee State University, when I started my photography business, bkvisual.z. It all started with a thoughtful Christmas gift—a camera. That gift sparked a passion I didn’t know I had. After returning to campus, I began capturing the world around me, starting with nature and eventually transitioning to photographing people. Portrait photography quickly became my focus, and I discovered how much I loved the process of creating meaningful, impactful images.
As I honed my craft, I realized the importance of continuously learning and improving. This dedication led me to make a pivotal decision: moving to Atlanta, Georgia, to expand my opportunities and connect with a vibrant community of talented creatives. The move was transformative, allowing me to grow my business and build relationships that have been instrumental to my success.
Now, as a 22-year-old Black female entrepreneur in Atlanta, I’m proud to say I’ve turned a passion into a thriving career. It’s been a journey of resilience, creativity, and growth, and I’m excited about the future of bkvisual.z and the impact I hope to make in the creative industry.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has taught me something valuable. Starting out, one of the biggest struggles was building a client base. I was passionate about photography, but getting people to trust me with their vision took time and persistence. In the beginning, I offered free or discounted shoots just to gain experience and showcase my work. That was a humbling but necessary step to grow my portfolio.
Another challenge was balancing my business with other responsibilities, like school and personal commitments. Time management became a skill I had to learn quickly to ensure I could meet deadlines and still provide quality work for my clients.
When I moved to Atlanta, I faced a whole new set of challenges. The city has a lot of talented photographers, so standing out in such a competitive market required me to constantly improve my skills and stay innovative. Financially, there were also struggles. Photography equipment and software can be expensive, so I had to make smart investments while staying within my budget.
Despite the bumps along the way, these experiences have made me more resilient and resourceful. Each obstacle pushed me to grow, adapt, and refine my craft, and I’m grateful for the lessons learned through those challenges.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As an editorial photographer, my work revolves around telling compelling stories through versatile and creative visuals. I specialize in capturing images that evoke emotion and meaning, whether it’s through fashion, lifestyle, or conceptual photography. My ability to adapt my style to fit various narratives is one of my greatest strengths, allowing me to collaborate across a range of projects and industries.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to bring a unique perspective to every shoot. I approach each project with a fresh vision, always striving to push boundaries and create imagery that resonates with viewers on a deeper level. My clients often tell me they appreciate how I’m able to bring their ideas to life while adding my own creative flair, which makes the final product stand out.
What sets me apart is my dedication to storytelling. Whether it’s a single image or a complete editorial series, I focus on crafting visuals that have depth and context. I draw inspiration from art, culture, and personal experiences, blending these elements to create work that feels authentic and visually striking.
Ultimately, my goal is to connect with audiences and leave a lasting impression, not just through the beauty of the images but through the stories they tell. That versatility and intention are what I believe define my work as an editorial photographer.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk-taking has played a significant role in my journey as a young Black photographer striving to build a successful business. To me, risk is all about stepping out of your comfort zone and betting on yourself, even when the outcome is uncertain. Every major step I’ve taken in my career has involved some level of risk.
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was moving to Atlanta to expand my business. I left behind familiarity and a support system to dive into a highly competitive market, not knowing if I’d find my place or connect with the right people. It was intimidating, but I knew the opportunities for growth and collaboration in a city like Atlanta were worth the gamble. That decision has been transformative for my career.
Another risk was investing in my craft when finances were tight. Photography equipment, marketing, and professional development aren’t cheap, and as a young entrepreneur, every dollar matters. But I’ve learned that taking calculated risks—like upgrading my gear or investing in a workshop to refine my skills—can pay off in the long run by improving the quality of my work and attracting more clients.
I wouldn’t call myself a natural risk-taker, but I’ve realized that growth often comes from those uncertain moments. To me, taking risks is less about being fearless and more about believing in your vision enough to push past the fear. Each risk I’ve taken has taught me resilience, resourcefulness, and the importance of trusting my instincts, which are all critical to building a successful business.
