Meet Bryant Andrews Sr. of Marvelous Light Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryant Andrews Sr.

Bryant, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My fascination with light was the start of my love for photography. I had a very strong affinity for light. Later on, I discovered the effects of light in photographs. I found a way to capture light with a camera. I attended Sutton Middle School in Atlanta. I enrolled in its after school photography class. I was the only African American in the class. Each day, they would NEVER allow ME to participate in the class. They would never allow me to use any of the equipment that tax payers had purchased. They acted like I wasn’t even in the class, period.

This made me want to learn photography even the more. So, I turned my mother’s bathroom in our house into a darkroom. In my own darkroom, I would master the techniques that were being taught in the after school photography class. I wanted to learn photography, and I wasn’t going to let nobody stop me.

In my eight grade year of high school, I met Mr. William Hollins of Chicago, in Atlanta. He is the owner of Hollin’s Fantastic Photography. He actually, physically chased me away from staring into his photography studio every day, LOLOL. So, after he figured out that he wasn’t going to catch me; and I wasn’t going to stop hanging around, he finally asked me what did I want!

I told him that I wanted to become a photographer. He challenged me every single day from that day forward. It wasn’t too much longer after that that I earned my very own key to his studio. Mr. Hollins didn’t spend any time teaching me photography. He made me clean his walls, walk Chico, (his dog). He never gave me a dime. He made me his legs, and made me carry his heavy lights, and light Stands. But, I had unlimited access to him for years.

Later, I met Mr. Tom Dorsey of Atlanta. Mr. Dorsey was and still is one of the greatest photographers that I have ever seen, or even heard of. He was a true artist, and photographer. Mr. Dorsey took me under his wings. No one in the photography circle believed that Mr. Dorsey had accepted a one on one pupil. He had, and it was me.

I eventually went on to work for several photography studios, such as PCA, Rich’s Portrait Studios, CPI Sears Portrait Studios, American Portrait Studios, PSI Portrait Specialist Incorporated, Glamour Shots, Moto Photo, One Hour Portrait Studios, Walmart Portrait Studios, and so forth.

None of those portrait studios seemed to compensate me accordingly to what I was profiting them. I eventually said no more of doing photography for people that don’t compensate me well. And that’s part of the reasoning for me starting my own business.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
NO. The industry is changing rapidly. I have to always create a need for my services. I depend on clients that have disposable income.
