Today we’d like to introduce you to Catt McCreary.
Hi Catt, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began performing and playing instruments very early in life. I really just loved performing, no matter what it was, I always wanted to be on stage! So my mom let me sign up for dance classes around the age of three, which was really my start to performing for people. I not only loved dancing but also the rhythmic music, so I was excited to begin piano lessons at five and percussion at age six.
After I got my start in classical music, I was given a drum kit for Christmas and that’s when I really started to get into pop and rock. This sort of led me into guitar around age 10. I started playing with an old Ibanez guitar my family had and taught myself to play Taylor Swift songs until I could remember the chords! Actually, learning the guitar is truly what helped me develop an interest in songwriting because of watching writer’s rounds in Athens, GA. Eventually, I started writing my own music and it always had a pop flavor to it.
Although I loved to dance, I gravitated towards being a musical performer and incorporating the rhythm I learned through dance and drumming. This is what led me to moving to Atlanta in middle school and getting involved with the School of Rock, transferring to the Lovett School, and joining their fine arts programs for both concert band and jazz. Between playing in alt rock bands with friends, testing out my original music at Eddie’s Attic, and joining the Duke Ellington Jazz Band at Lovett, I was fully indulged in the music industry and loved every second of learning about it.
Eventually, when deciding where to go for college, it became difficult to choose an avenue of music between jazz and writing my original pop music. Writing and performing my own music was what I felt the most passionate about, which is why I chose Belmont University in Nashville, TN; the national home of songwriters. Ultimately, I wanted to experience a city that is centered around songwriting so I could work to improve my songwriting and artistry.
Fast forward to today, back in Atlanta – I have graduated from Belmont and feel that my time in Music City combined with my roots in Atlanta has allowed me to incorporate my soul/jazz background, my love for Atlanta hip-hop, and my love for pop songwriting, to create my artistry as Catt McCreary.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When my mom and I first decided that Atlanta was the move for me to fully pursue a career in the music industry, we loaded up, dogs and all, drove from Athens every Monday morning at 5 am, eating breakfast in the car, and off to class. We would stay during the school week and then load back up on Friday and drive back to Athens, which is what allowed me to attend Lovett, School of Rock, and play shows in Atlanta during the week. There was no easy way of moving from Athens due to various obstacles. Yet, my mom and I made the sacrifices, financially, physically, and emotionally, to help me pursue my passion. There are struggles in the entertainment industry but I would say, to date, this is the biggest one we conquered. Taking on the tough transitions is what allowed me to grow into the person and artist I am today. I am always grateful for those who have helped me along my journey.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a pop artist, songwriter and producer. As an independent artist, I write songs, record, produce, release, and perform all of my music, as well as handle the business aspects of my career. I feel that my influences from jazz and hip-hop in Atlanta, combined with my experiences in both pop and alt rock have fused into an organic sound represented in my music. I’m most proud of this sound that is an honest blend of my life and background, allowing me a unique perspective and inclusion of all of the genres I have grown to respect over the years. I’m beyond grateful that fusing together my backgrounds from various genres has allowed me to create music with a distinct perspective and sound. I would have to add that I am proud to look back and reflect on how far I’ve come, from a little drummer girl to living my dream as a full-fledged pop artist. It’s been surreal to look back at my acoustic songwriter shows in 8th grade and playing the Buckhead Theatre in high school in comparison to my current knowledge of the industry and brand.
