Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Musick.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Courtney. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I was not into makeup at all. I wore the bare minimum amount just to hide my insecurities and sometimes eyeliner on special occasions. My mom was always very glamorous; she loved to do her hair and makeup every morning, but that just wasn’t for me. I did martial arts, lacrosse, and eventually found myself in my high school’s theatre program. I tried my share of being on stage, but that wasn’t for me either. I eventually found myself part of the backstage crew and loved it. Here, I started assisting the actors with the wigs and sometimes the makeup. I continued to grow and eventually became the official hair and makeup artist for the spring musical of my senior year. I went off to college and didn’t expect I would ever pursue makeup as my full-time job. But one day my roommate had come home and told me about a fashion club on campus that needed a makeup artist.
So I decided to check it out. I had never tried editorial or runway makeup before, but once I began, I couldn’t stop. I did makeup for photo shoots and fashion shows all over campus and eventually began doing test shoots with other local photographers. This was when I knew I wanted to pursue makeup as my career. Since then, I have completely dove into my career as an editorial and beauty makeup artist and also started working for MAC Cosmetics in 2015, where I became a Certified Makeup Artist.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Because being a makeup artist wasn’t my first career plan, I never thought I would make it this far. All of the opportunities I was given feel like blessings. However, it hasn’t been a smooth road. It was a big adjustment from being a business student to full-time makeup artist. Learning how to build a brand with a steady clientele was not easy. It requires a large amount of time and money to not only build my skills but also my kit. It continues to take a lot of effort to pursue my dreams, but its a journey that has been extremely rewarding.
Please tell us about Courtney Musick – Makeup Artist.
My main focus has always been fashion and editorial makeup. I love the art of it. It’s an industry that is constantly changing and pushes me to use my full creativity. Part of that is using the techniques I have learned from the fashion world to translate into everyday beauty makeup. No matter the style of makeup, skin is always my focus. I love creating flawless and youthful looking skin. I love for makeup to enhance a person’s beauty, not completely change the way they look.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
As much as I would love to the chance to go back and correct my mistakes, they have all served as lessons. Sometimes I regret going to business school (and all of the student loans that came with it), but I would not have found my career path without it. Other days I regret how much I have doubted myself over the years. I always learn things the hard way. Surviving in a fast pace industry means learning to adapt and grow, and thats exactly what’s I have learned to do from my mistakes.
