Meet Stephanie Dalton of Dalton Projects in Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Dalton.

Stephanie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My entire adult life has been spent in the creative arts field. I began my career as a photographer, working in both Miami, then New York City for the Museum of Natural History. Throughout the 80’s in and into the early 90’s I worked as a graphic designer and creative director. In 1996, I attended a digital illustration conference in New York City that inspired me to pursue illustrating, and by 1999, I was working full time as an illustrator and visual artist.

I create mixed media works both digitally and on canvas + panels. My works have appeared in newsstand magazines, book jackets, theater posters, movie sets and in hotels and public spaces here in Atlanta, and around the U.S., the U.K., Belgium, Israel and China.

I love working at home and have a great team of people who represent me. I work with Rapp Art in New York City who assist me with illustration work assignments for all types of print media. Film Art LA places my fine art pieces in films and television. Some of those works have appeared in the following feature films: Failure to Launch, Enchanted, The Inside man, The Happening, Law Abiding Citizen, Don’t Mess with the Zohan and People Like Us. More recently 9 of my mixed media encaustic works were selected to appear in Season 2, Episodes 2, 3 and 11 of The Following. Locally, my encaustic works are available at Thomas Deans Fine Art at Miami Circle. I also have works in a collection at The W Hotel in Midtown and The Ritz Carlton in Buckhead.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My father once said working for yourself is easier than you think and harder than you know. I find that to be very true in my case. I have worked for others and I’ve worked for myself, and I am definitely the happiest working from my home studio. Of course, there is always someone I am working for, either through assignments, galleries, interior decorators or art placement and the process is always unfolding and evolving. I’d say my biggest challenge is in keeping up with the demands of my work assignments and balancing those requests with my desire to create fine art for my clients and gallery interests.

Dalton Projects – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company name is Dalton Projects, which is basically the name I chose to encompass all my creative interests. Essentially, I am a sole proprietor and full-time artist. I balance my creative energies in the field of illustration and fine art. From 2005 -2008, I partnered with my husband Robert Cowan to open a gallery here in Atlanta called Dalton Cowan Gallerie which was located in Tula Art Center in Buckhead. That was something we both enjoyed very much. Perhaps in the future, we will create another gallery. In the meantime, I enjoy the connections I’ve made through art making with so many great clients and friends. I’d have to say my biggest joy is having someone collect my work. That, and seeing my work in films and hanging in public spaces is what gives me great pleasure and satisfaction.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is following your bliss, plain and simple.
