Today we’d like to introduce you to Darchelle and Darrell Exum.
Darchelle and Darrell, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been an entrepreneur and enjoyed working for myself. For 20+ years, I worked in childcare. Over time, I felt the urge to try something different, something that would bring joy to people and something that would pair my love of my city (Atlanta) with a business need that was not being fulfilled.
One of my favorite things to do is travel. Last year, while traveling in another city, my family and I signed up for a Pedal Tavern tour where you pedal from bar to bar and have a great time. I had done this before, but this time, afterward, I started thinking about the idea of bringing this concept to Atlanta myself. It would be something that people would enjoy doing and be happy to pay for, unlike childcare, and it would also fulfill a business need related to tourism and entertainment in metro Atlanta. After about ten months, we were up and running and continue to grow daily through marketing via social media and platforms such as this.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road and is still not a smooth road. The biggest issue is the lack of accessible knowledge related to this business type. We went in blind on this business in every way. From figuring out how to procure the bikes, to how to describe and market a pedal bike tour. Most people are unfamiliar with this concept, especially in Atlanta, so it takes a while for them to understand how it works. Luckily, once they do grasp the concept, people are excited and want to try it for themselves. Nonetheless, not having an abundance of insight or wisdom from outside sources, has made this very tough. There are no books or websites on how to build a pedal bike business as you would find for a restaurant or childcare business. We continue to progress through trial and error.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Atlanta Peach Roll is Atlanta’s only LUXURY 15-seater party bike. We provide “sightseeing with a twist!” We offer bar crawls, food tours, sports pre-games, and more on a pedal bike.
We specialize in fun in an uncommon way. Our company provides something different than your standard Girls’ Night, Bachelorette party, or Date Nite. We are proud to offer a product that people enjoy and recommend often to their friends and family. We are a customer-centric company. We are set apart through our exceptional relationships with restaurant and bar managers who provide food specials and deals to our customers and promote our company for us. We could only accomplish this through positive business practices and putting the customer first always.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I do think Atlanta is a good place. The general customer base is there. In fact, there are so many types of people, the biggest struggle will be honing in on your target market. That would be my advice for someone starting fresh: figure out your target market before you start shelling out money for marketing.
Still, Atlanta could improve in some ways. As far as tourism, Atlanta has a long way to go. People do not see Atlanta, GA as a standard tourist destination and Atlanta Peach Roll is one of the few companies looking to change that. The city itself does not have the quality of events and attractions that other cities have (on a regular basis). Downtown Atlanta, especially, could be better up kept, cleaner and more modern. There is definitely room for improvement Downtown, where we are located. Moving forward, we are optimistic that, by creating a solid market for tourism, we will be the solution to our own problem because the city will be more apt to improve and modernize.
