Today we’d like to introduce you to David Walker.
David, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a business attorney that works exclusively with start-up and small business owners.
I do not practice any “bad news” law, like divorce, criminal, or bankruptcy.
I help start-up and small owners start their business, buy and sell businesses and raise capital for their business.
I’ve been practicing for 19 years. For the first 10 years of my career, I worked at large law firms, served as corporate counsel and president of a venture capital firm, took 2 companies public, and served as legal counsel to a public company. In 2008, I opened my law practice in Atlantic Station working exclusively with start-up and small business owners.
Before I became a lawyer, I graduated from The University of Michigan with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and received a Juris Doctorate from The University of Detroit – Mercy.
I have lived in Atlanta since 2004 and I started a bottled water company, StarWalker Industries, in 2014. The bottled water company sells spring, purified and alkaline bottled water by the truckload, just over 38,000 bottles.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are always struggles along the way to being an entrepreneur. The key is to have a way to center yourself and your mind. The strategy I use to realign my life is to prioritize from inside-out. These issues take priority in my life when all about me is collapsing:
1. Self – I check my faith and focus on personal issues like health, working out, or even needing something to eat.
2. Family – I confirm that all family and friend members are safe and healthy.
3. Staff – It’s important to make sure that your staff is healthy, focused and provided the necessary resources to proceed.
4. Clients – I like to reach out to my current clients to make sure all their legal needs are attended to.
5. Colleagues – Networking with other business owners and attorneys is a good way to keep in touch and spread your contacts.
6. Potential Clients – If you prioritize 1 through 5, then this will occur naturally.
Please tell us about more about your practice.
As a business attorney, I serve as legal counsel to small and start-up business owners. In addition to preparing and reviewing contracts, I help business owners raise capital and understand the world of investing. If investors are sharks, then I’m the shark repellent for the business owners.
There is nothing more satisfying then engaging a business owner at their earliest thoughts, encouraging them to stay persistent, then seeing the resulting sustainability. You don’t find this kind of passion in corporate law.
One of the things I do differently than other attorneys is I don’t charge my retainer clients for phone calls. If you’ve ever worked for an attorney before, then you know they charge for all phone calls. I don’t. I like that business owners can call me to talk about their business and build a relationship with me without being charged for each interaction over the phone.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to give my younger self advice in starting over, I’d say to outsource matters that are not understood within an hour. Do not get stuck in paralysis by analysis. Instead, hire people that specialize in the task sought to be accomplished.
