Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetric Sims Jr.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My passion for veterinary medicine started at a young age, growing up in a family where I learned the importance of perseverance, compassion, and making the most of the opportunities in front of me. Over time, that passion grew into a desire to understand animal health, disease, and the connection between animal and human health. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, followed by a master’s degree in Comparative Biomedical Sciences from the University of Georgia, with an emphasis in Integrative Biomedical Physiology. Along the way, I gained experience working in veterinary medicine, including oncology and internal medicine, where I saw firsthand how much of a difference compassionate, knowledgeable veterinary professionals can make in the lives of animals and their families.
My journey has not been without challenges, but those experiences have strengthened my determination to pursue veterinary medicine. I currently work in anatomic pathology, where I continue developing my understanding of disease processes and the science behind diagnosis. My long-term goal is to become a veterinary pathologist and contribute to research and disease surveillance, particularly where animal health intersects with public health and zoonotic diseases.
That same passion led me to establish B.A.R.K., which stands for Because Animals Require Kindness. I founded B.A.R.K. to help address the barriers that prevent families from accessing essential pet care, particularly in underserved communities. I believe that caring for animals should not be a luxury, and that education, preventive care, and access to veterinary resources can make a meaningful difference for both pets and the people who love them. Through community events, educational outreach, and animal welfare initiatives, B.A.R.K. allows me to turn that belief into action.
As a husband, father, veterinary medicine professional, and nonprofit founder, I want my work to have an impact beyond myself. My journey is about more than earning a veterinary degree or building an organization; it is about creating opportunities, serving communities, and helping improve the lives of animals and people. I hope to continue growing B.A.R.K. while pursuing my veterinary career and ultimately contribute to a future where every animal has a better chance at receiving the care it deserves.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Balancing my career, family, and goal of becoming a veterinarian has been challenging. During graduate school, I dealt with an Achilles injury and the effects of COVID-19, which impacted my academic performance. I’ve also faced veterinary school rejections, which can be discouraging when you’ve invested so much time and effort into pursuing a goal.
Building B.A.R.K. has come with its own challenges, especially learning how to manage a nonprofit with limited resources while balancing work and family life. However, these experiences have taught me to be patient and keep working toward what I want to accomplish.
I’m still working toward veterinary school, and I know the journey isn’t over. In the meantime, I’m continuing to gain experience in pathology and growing B.A.R.K. I’ve learned that taking a different route doesn’t mean giving up on the destination.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently work as a High Complexity Grossing Assistant in anatomic pathology, where I help prepare tissue specimens for examination and diagnosis. My role involves working with human tissue samples, carefully examining and processing specimens, and ensuring they are properly prepared for pathologists to evaluate. Attention to detail is essential because the work we do contributes to accurate diagnoses and ultimately helps guide patient care.
My background is in biology and comparative biomedical sciences, and my interest in pathology comes from wanting to understand disease beyond what we can see on the surface. I previously worked in veterinary oncology and internal medicine, which gave me valuable experience seeing how diseases affect animals and how veterinary teams work to diagnose and treat them.
What I’m most proud of is being able to connect my scientific background with work that has a meaningful impact on healthcare. Although my current role focuses on human pathology, my long-term goal is to pursue veterinary pathology and contribute to research involving animal health and diseases that can affect both animals and humans.
I believe what sets me apart is the combination of my experience in both veterinary medicine and pathology, along with my commitment to community service through my nonprofit, B.A.R.K. I’m interested not only in understanding disease but also in how science, education, and access to care can improve lives. I’m continuing to build my experience while working toward those long-term goals.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories was watching Spider-Man for the first time. I was instantly hooked by the idea of someone using his abilities to help others, even when things weren’t easy for him. Spider-Man became more than just a superhero I enjoyed watching; he was a character I grew up admiring. Looking back, that childhood memory is even more meaningful now that I’m a father and can share that same love for Spider-Man with my daughters.
