Today we’d like to introduce you to Desmond Jenkins.
Hi Desmond, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I spent over 20 years working in telecommunications, installing and repairing internet, TV, and phone services in homes and businesses. During that time, I saw something over and over again. Technology was advancing quickly, but many older adults were being left behind.
The moment that changed everything for me was with my grandmother. She was 85 years old, determined to stay independent, but completely new to smartphones. I started teaching her from the very beginning how to answer a call, send a text, and use apps. What I saw was not just her learning technology, but her gaining confidence. She became more connected with family, more independent in her daily life, and even started showing others what she had learned.
At the same time, I was seeing families struggle to teach their parents and grandparents, and I realized there was a real gap. There were tech support companies, but no one focused on teaching seniors in a way that made them feel comfortable, safe, and confident.
That is how GrandSun Digital started.
What began as helping individuals quickly grew through word of mouth into partnerships with senior living communities across Atlanta. Today, I provide both one-on-one support and structured group programs focused on smartphone basics, online safety, and scam prevention.
As technology continues to evolve, I see this work as more than just support. It is about helping seniors stay independent, connected to their families, and protected in a digital world that can sometimes feel overwhelming and, at times, unsafe.
Everything we do at GrandSun Digital is still built with my Granny in mind.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but the challenges have shaped how I approach the work today.
One of the biggest challenges early on was building trust. Many older adults have either had frustrating experiences with technology or felt embarrassed asking for help. Some had even been taken advantage of. So it was not just about teaching technology. It was about creating an environment where they felt comfortable, respected, and safe asking questions.
Another challenge was turning what started as helping individuals into a structured business. In the beginning, everything was one-on-one and word of mouth. Over time, I had to develop a more organized approach with group classes, community partnerships, and repeatable programs that could consistently deliver value.
I also had to learn how to slow things down and communicate differently. What may seem simple to someone familiar with technology can feel overwhelming to someone who is just getting started. That forced me to become more patient, more intentional, and more clear in how I teach.
Looking back, those challenges helped shape GrandSun Digital into what it is today. It is not just about fixing problems. It is about building confidence, trust, and long-term independence for the people I serve.
We’ve been impressed with GrandSun Digital, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
GrandSun Digital provides technology education and support specifically for older adults, with a focus on helping them stay confident, connected, and protected in today’s digital world.
While many services focus on fixing devices, we focus on teaching. That difference matters. The seniors we work with are not just trying to solve a one-time issue. They are trying to understand how to use their devices in a way that helps them stay independent and avoid common risks like scams or security threats.
We specialize in working with senior living communities as well as individuals, offering both one-on-one support and structured group programs. Our most in-demand programs focus on scam prevention, online safety, password management, and smartphone basics. These are areas where many seniors feel overwhelmed, but also where the impact of the right guidance can be life-changing.
What sets GrandSun Digital apart is our approach. Everything we do is built around patience, clarity, and real-world application. We meet seniors where they are, remove the pressure, and give them simple, practical steps they can actually use. Our programs are designed to be interactive, relatable, and easy to follow, not technical or overwhelming.
One example is our Staying Safe Online series, a multi-session program we deliver inside senior living communities. Rather than trying to cover everything at once, residents build confidence over multiple sessions through topics like how scams work, how to protect their devices and personal information, and what to do if something goes wrong. This creates better retention and a stronger sense of independence.
Brand-wise, what I am most proud of is the trust we have built. Families trust GrandSun with their loved ones. Communities trust GrandSun with their residents. And the seniors we work with begin to trust themselves again when it comes to using technology.
At the end of the day, everything we do is built with my Granny in mind. We want seniors to feel confident using their devices, connected to the people who matter most, and protected in a digital world that is constantly changing.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The best way to work with GrandSun Digital is through partnerships with senior living communities. We provide ongoing technology education and support through structured programs, including group classes and hands-on support sessions that give residents consistent access to help throughout the year.
For families and individuals, we also offer one-on-one support for seniors who need help learning their devices, staying connected, or navigating things like online safety and scams. Many families reach out when they want a trusted, patient resource for their parents or grandparents.
We also collaborate with organizations and professionals who serve seniors, including community staff, healthcare providers, and local groups, to bring technology education directly to the people who need it most.
If you are part of a senior living community, have a loved one who could benefit from support, or are looking to partner in serving older adults, I would love to connect. You can reach out and learn more at www.grandsundigital.com or find me on LinkedIn at www.linkedin.com/in/grandsundigital.
