Meet Devin Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Johnson.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
In Atlanta, I don’t think any of our stories are dramatically different. At times it feels like we are all experiencing the same thing in different ways. Where I am in my life currently has taken a lot of work, mainly dedication, but has been so much fun. The best part is that my journey still continues …

My brand Dope Overdose started small in high school, just me selling t-shirts to close friends and going to the inner city to shoot photos in peak Tumblr days. It’s always been an outlet for me and a form of expression. In my clothes, I could be who it ever I wanted to be. The response and constant support drove me to carry it into college at GSU where I connected and built relationships with awesome people like Donte Maurice, Jodeci Zimmerman (who’s now my business partner), and others who I still know to this day. Overall my brand evolved while going to school Downtown and while it started off as a clothing brand through my time in school it was able to blossom into something more.

By graduation, it was clear that I wasn’t going to spend my life working some tiresome job every day just for money. Instead, I decided to take my business and skills to the next level. When I teamed up with my two friends Qua Coleman + Jodeci we created a full functioning branding agency & creative hub now known as Dope Overdose Studios.

Please tell us about your art.
I create through numerous outlets including photography, graphic design, fashion, and music. I take pride in balancing multiple talents because to me, that’s what I true artist is.. You take what you know and can create something beautiful from it..it’s like magic. My goal has always been to be the best I can be whether it’s through creativity or not. I’m determined to leave some type of impact, even if it’s just as a source of inspiration. I want people around me to know that anything is truly possible, so I encompass that as much as possible.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The biggest challenge most artist face today is not taking the time to understand who they truly are in life and as an artist. That lack of certainty and confidence I feel like is what leads to the copying and irrelevant comparison of yourself to other people on social media. It’s ok to be you. It’s ok to have your own style. It’s ok to be different. There’s room for all of us.

This is another reason I am very proud of the business we created as this concept is at the core of its foundation. While we are also artists, we are helping/providing a platform for other artists to win as well.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can view our work first on ig just because social media is where most of our clients find us.
