Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Prince Akeem.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey as a DJ started with saying yes to every opportunity I could get. Early on, I was DJing anywhere that would give me a chance, bowling alleys, house parties, department stores, school events, and small local gatherings. Before any of the bigger opportunities came, I spent an entire year practicing at home almost every single day, learning how to read a crowd, blend different genres, and create an experience instead of just playing songs.
That consistency eventually opened doors to larger events and some of Atlanta’s most notable clubs, lounges, and parties. As my name started growing through word of mouth and social media, I built a reputation for bringing high energy, professionalism, versatility, and creating moments people remember long after the event ends.
Today, I DJ a wide range of events including weddings, corporate events, nightlife, private events, and large youth events across the country. One thing that has stayed the same through every stage of my career is my focus on the experience. Whether it’s a packed dance floor at a wedding, an upscale corporate event, or a club set, my goal is always to make people feel something through music and create an atmosphere that connects everyone in the room.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Building a name for yourself as a DJ takes time, consistency, and a lot of patience. Early on, one of the biggest challenges was earning trust from clients and standing out in a city like Atlanta, where the DJ community is talented but also very competitive. A lot of DJs hold residencies at venues for years, so opportunities don’t always come quickly. Sometimes it really comes down to being prepared when the right opportunity finally presents itself.
There were also plenty of moments where I had to keep pushing even when things were moving slowly. I spent countless hours practicing, networking, and taking smaller gigs just to continue growing and sharpening my craft. One quote that has always stuck with me is “success is when preparation meets opportunity,” and that’s been true throughout my journey. Every small event, late night practice session, and challenge helped prepare me for the bigger opportunities that eventually came my way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an open format DJ specializing in weddings, corporate events, nightlife, and private events. What I really pride myself on is creating experiences that feel personal, high-energy, and memorable no matter the setting. I’m known for being able to read a crowd, blend genres seamlessly, and keep people engaged from the beginning of an event until the very end. Whether it’s an elegant wedding reception, a packed corporate event, or a nightlife set, my goal is always the same… make sure people feel connected through the music and leave talking about the experience afterward.
One thing that sets me apart is my versatility. Growing up between Montreal, Toronto, and Atlanta exposed me to a wide range of cultures and music styles, and that influence shows in my sets. I can move naturally between genres, generations, and different types of crowds in a way that feels authentic and smooth. I’m also known for creating custom edits and mixes that people won’t hear anywhere else, which helps make every event feel unique.
Beyond DJing events, I’ve also had the opportunity to work in radio as a mixshow DJ for nationally syndicated platforms including the Rickey Smiley Morning Show and SiriusXM’s FlyRide. Those experiences helped sharpen my creativity, professionalism, and ability to perform at a high level consistently.
What I’m most proud of is the trust people place in me for some of the biggest moments in their lives. From weddings and milestone celebrations to major corporate events and youth events, I never take that responsibility lightly. Seeing a packed dance floor, hearing clients say their guests are still talking about the event weeks later, and building long-term relationships through music is easily the most rewarding part of what I do.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happiest is seeing people genuinely enjoy themselves and create memories together through music. There’s something special about watching a room full of different people connect on the dance floor, celebrate big moments, and forget about everything else for a few hours.
I also enjoy the creative side of DJing, discovering music, building mixes, and finding the right energy for every crowd. No two events are ever the same, and I love the challenge of creating an experience that feels unique to that moment.
Beyond that, I’m grateful that something that started as a passion and countless hours of practice has grown into a career that allows me to impact people in a positive way.
