Today we’d like to introduce you to Dymond Alexis.
Hi Dymond, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey into media and digital storytelling started long before social media became what it is today. Growing up in Kinston, North Carolina, I always loved writing and entertainment. In middle school, one of my English teachers encouraged me to write more seriously, and by high school I joined my school newspaper, The Viking Press, where I eventually created an entertainment section focused on music, artists, and pop culture. I also covered sports stories, including following NBA player Brandon Ingram’s basketball career while he attended Kinston High School.
While attending Temple University in Philadelphia, I launched my first media platform, Blackaphillyated, in 2015. What started as a passion project quickly grew into a recognized entertainment and culture platform covering music, celebrity news, events, and Black culture. My approach was always more positive and community-driven, which helped the platform stand out during a time when entertainment blogs were rapidly growing online.
As the platform gained visibility, opportunities started happening naturally. Celebrities began reposting and engaging with my content, and I started receiving invitations to major festivals, concerts, and entertainment events including Governors Ball, Made in America Festival, Broccoli City Festival, and more. Through Blackaphillyated, I also conducted interviews with entertainers and public figures including Marlon Wayans, Saweetie, Vivica A. Fox, Cynthia Bailey, and others.
During that same time, I was also gaining hands-on experience in the music and media industries while balancing college. I worked with Sony Music on artist marketing campaigns, helping create promotional campaigns, college activations, and events for artists including Wyclef Jean, Miguel, H.E.R., Lecrae, Nick Grant, and more artists across the Sony Music roster. I later worked at Radio One Philadelphia, where I gained experience in audio production, digital media, promotions, and entertainment communications.
Over the years, I expanded into freelance communications consulting, social media strategy, content creation, and digital marketing, helping businesses, nonprofits, and brands grow their online presence through storytelling and audience engagement. I later worked as Social Media Manager for Arizona PBS and Manager of Digital Strategy at East Carolina University, where I led digital campaigns, audience engagement strategies, and multimedia storytelling initiatives.
Today, I continue building my brand as Dymond Alexis while helping businesses and organizations strengthen their visibility through strategic content, social media management, digital storytelling, and creative campaigns. My journey has taught me that consistency, authenticity, and building genuine relationships can truly open doors you never imagined.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There were moments where everything felt like it was finally happening for me professionally, but life forced me to make some difficult decisions. Around the same time my career was rapidly growing, I became pregnant with my son. Even while pregnant, I continued pursuing opportunities and building my career — I even worked the Grammy Awards red carpet while expecting.
At the time, I was one of Sony Music Entertainment’s top marketing representatives and had opportunities that could have completely changed the trajectory of my career. But without the support system or resources needed to relocate to New York and continue pursuing those opportunities full-time, I found myself facing a major crossroads between chasing my career ambitions and being fully present for my son.
Eventually, I made the difficult decision to leave Philadelphia, step away from my dream role at Radio One, and move back home to Kinston. Honestly, that season of my life was extremely emotional because I felt so close to everything I had worked for. I was interviewing with companies I once dreamed of working for, building industry relationships, and gaining momentum in entertainment media, but I also understood that my responsibilities had grown beyond just myself.
What’s interesting is that even after stepping away from the entertainment industry full-time, opportunities still continued to find me. A lot of people don’t realize Marlon Wayans, Sheryl Lee Ralph and others — often right from my own living room.
During the day, I worked as a teacher, but at night, I would turn my ring light on and step right back into being Dymond Alexis: the journalist, storyteller, and creative.
That season taught me one of the most important lessons of my career: to build something that truly belongs to you. No matter what city I lived in, what position I held, or what obstacles came my way, I still had my creativity, storytelling ability, and passion for helping others grow through media and content. That realization pushed me further into entrepreneurship, freelance communications, digital strategy, and building my own brand long-term.
More than anything, that experience taught me how to pivot, adapt, and continue creating opportunities for myself even when life did not go according to plan.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in digital storytelling, content creation, branding, and marketing strategy, helping brands and businesses create authentic online experiences that connect with audiences and drive visibility.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Two books that really stood out to me were The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae and Angel’s Laws of Blogging. I loved hearing their story and learning about their journey before the success because it felt relatable, authentic, and inspiring as a creative building something from the ground up.
Podcast-wise, I love content that’s funny but still motivating and business-minded. Pour Minds is definitely one of my favorites because they’ve taken their platform far beyond just a podcast and built a full brand and business around it. It’s really inspiring to watch how they’ve continued to evolve, grow their audience, and create opportunities for themselves outside of social media.
As far as apps and tools, I’m definitely an Adobe Express and Canva girl. I’ve used other editing platforms, but those are still my favorites because they allow me to creatively direct and manually edit my content exactly how I want it. I enjoy having control over the storytelling and visual details of my content rather than relying too heavily on automated editing tools. I’ve tried apps like CapCut and Captions, but I often find myself going back in and re-editing everything manually anyway.
