Meet Felton Langlois Jr. of Smallworld Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Felton Langlois Jr.

Felton Langlois Jr

Hi Felton, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I got my start in New Orleans after opening a recording studio in my parent’s garage back in 1989. New Orleans had about 300 record labels at that time; I was charging $10 an hour. Everybody who’s anybody recorded with me. Before long, I started making beats which led to me serving as both the engineer and producer, throughout my career, I’ve recorded over 350 albums from the major movers like Cash Money Records and No Limit Records to the small indie labels. SmallWorld Studio is still making moves. Expansions are on the rise, as I am now branching out into film and commercial music production.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, the road has been rough, due to all of the hurricanes that plague New Orleans, Smallworld Studio has had a total of three locations. Every time we got washed away, we had to rebuild. In the early 2000s things started to slow down as a result of innovations and technology. Anyone with a laptop thought that they had a professional recording studio. The only advantage I had was that I could record full bands. They couldn’t do that at home. Now I’m in Atlanta, where things are slowly picking up. The future looks good for Smallworld Studio.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Smallworld Studio is a professional ProTools recording studio. We record and produce live music, and we program beats using software. We’ve been in the business for over 30 years; Smallworld Studio also offers mixing and mastering for those who record at home. Those who may want the commercial studio sound. The projects I’m most proud of are the ones I’ve produced and recorded along with my wife, “CoCo Wade.” She’s a singer-songwriter and a music producer as well. We have been releasing music together since 2015. As a result, streaming revenues have been consistent and quite impressive. Another extraordinary accomplishment is the fact that I recently recorded the soundtrack for the award winning movie “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” featuring Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman and a host of other great acts in 2020. Amongst other major milestones, my studio was featured during an episode of American Idol in 2018.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes. During the Covid-19 crisis. We were fortunate to still have money coming in simply because of the fact that our music was streaming very well. Passive income is the best thing to have in an instance where the world shuts down, and you can’t go outside.
