Meet Fred Flu of The Fluniversity in Metro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fred Flu.

Fred, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born in Fort Hood, Texas to parents that were both in the military (Army), I began my culinary career in 2010 and have continued to strive to become the best personal chef of our time. I incorporate music and traditional cultural taste from my personal encounters into my creations. I love to create an everlasting food impression for my clients, taking their taste experience out of this world.

Prior to cooking in 2010, I was influenced into this culinary journey by my father and grandmothers from both sides of my family. As a curious kid, I continued to hang around the kitchen to unravel the mysterious cooking secrets my father and grandmothers kept from the rest of the family. Trial and error of burning food for my siblings on the weekends when my parents did not cook led me to keep practicing and teaching myself with lots of questions to be asked during the process.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No such thing as a smooth road in the culinary industry. You have to experience the many aspects this career has to offer. In order to know your niche, you have to be willing able to work in the different sectors of this field. Making sacrifices along the way is major key! I sacrificed my personal living space, job opportunities, and relationships to get to this point. I still feel as if I need to make more sacrifices to continue but only time and God will tell when those will happen.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Fluniversity – what should we know?
Fluniversity LLC. is my personal chef service business I started in 2016. I provide private dinners and intimate catering to parties no bigger than 25 people. I am known for my untraditional style of not wearing a chef coat while cooking with a fly fedora appearance wise. Food wise, my signature smoked salmon Mac n cheese is my most popular dish to date. Social media, I incorporate food lyrics from some of my favorite artist into an entertaining tutorial on how to make that food item talked about in the song. I am proud as a company that my business and brand is growing rapidly. What sets me apart is that I relate to my clients through food by tailoring their request specifically to their liking with my creative twist.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Growing up in a military family definitely has been a special quality of my success. Being exposed to different cultures, people, and environments has helped me become a relatable individual. I feel like my open mind and willingness to continue to learn sets me apart along with my hustle mentality.
I wanna give a shoutout to my close friends and family who’ve provide me with a place to crash, encouragement when I was down and out, business move advice, and my business supporters who’ve trusted me with their food an those who’ve spread the word about Fluniversity.
