Meet Heng Kang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heng Kang.

Heng, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was the first film that I had seen in the cinema. I think that film made me curious about the film. I chose Digital Media Arts as my BA major in Communication University of China. After participated in lots of short film production, I found myself get more interests in the camera team. I want to work as a DP for my career. After I joined the exchange program and went to Singapore, especially after I was invited to a Taiwan film festival, those experiences really opened my mind. Different teams some were really professional some were student team as we were. But really surprised me was their ideas behind those films. So, I made a decision to study aboard to dig deeper into this field. After I got here, I put more attention on the camera. I worked as an AC or camera PA to learn from the set. Then, I started DP some short films.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The most challenging thing is the language. The first day I was on set was a nightmare, I know all the equipment, but I don’t know the English name and sometimes some people like to use the short name or nickname of the equipment. I totally don’t know what should I grab. It was frustrating. I have to learn the name of the equipment. And find the chance to improve my spoken language.

Heng – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m still a student cause the visa I have to graduate then have my own business.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The day we wrapped our thesis film. It was a milestone for my college student. I’m still a student of a filmmaker but it means I’m in the next step.
