Today we’d like to introduce you to Ismael Lugo
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Ismael Lugo, I’m from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and I’ve always been passionate about photography. I studied audiovisual production in Mexico, and since I was young, I’ve been involved in various photography projects. When I arrived in the United States, I started my journey here in a way different from what I had imagined. I first moved to Houston, where I worked in construction and remodeling, just like many immigrants, looking for opportunities to get ahead. Although it wasn’t the work I dreamed of, I always kept my true passion, photography, in my mind.
Life took an unexpected turn when a strong hurricane forced me to move to Atlanta, Georgia. From the moment I arrived, I felt a special connection with the city. Despite being far from home and facing challenges, I felt like Atlanta was my place. My wife Paola and I began building our family from the ground up, working together in construction and learning many life lessons. Although there were tough days when I felt frustrated and sad about not doing what I loved, we always had the clear goal of pursuing photography.
The pandemic was a turning point. While many people mourned the loss of work and events, for us, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Although I was still working in construction, it was during this time that more opportunities started coming up in the photography world. The pandemic caused a backlog of events that hadn’t been able to take place, and that’s when I began receiving more calls from people looking for a photographer. Even though I had nothing on my calendar at that time, my strategy was to act “booked,” and surprisingly, that attracted even more clients. What started with a couple of events in that first year quickly multiplied due to referrals and the quality of the work.
Little by little, photography sessions became more frequent, but I was still relying on construction work to support myself. However, there came a point when I had to make a decision. I told a “white lie” to my boss, saying I was going on vacation for a month, when in reality, it was going to be a month of intensive photography work. The first weeks were tough, with no calls coming in, but almost at the end of the month, I received a call from a client, and that changed everything. From that moment on, the work started rolling in. Clients began reaching out to us, and suddenly, photography went from being a passion to a solid career.
Today, many people we know, including some clients, or even followers on our social media, reach out to ask how we’ve made it, if there’s a secret formula or strategy we use. And honestly, Paola and I have talked about this, and we attribute it all to God. He’s the one who has given us this blessing and the opportunity to do what we love, to create beautiful memories for families. We don’t know anything about marketing, sales strategies, or magical formulas, but what we do, we do it with love, dedication, and joy, sometimes even at odd hours, because that’s just who we are. We’ve always believed that with God by our side, anything is possible, and that’s the main formula we can share: faith and hard work.
Con este cierre, resaltamos no solo la trayectoria y el esfuerzo, sino también el componente personal y espiritual que es tan importante para ti. Si deseas ajustar algo más, no dudes en decirme.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been easy, honestly. It’s like swimming against the current in a country that isn’t your own—a place where, in some ways, you don’t have the same rights because you’re not legally part of it. However, one very important thing I’ve always kept in mind is respect and gratitude for this country. Even though I don’t have a piece of paper that makes me a part of this nation, I’ve always felt the need to treat it as if it were my own, to be thankful for the opportunities it has given me, for the work, and for the place it has offered me to move forward.
The journey has undoubtedly been challenging. Language has always been a barrier, even to this day. But we’ve found tools and ways to communicate, to understand, and to give each client the attention they deserve. Another major difficulty was getting our name out there and making ourselves known in a market where we were strangers. However, that’s where our clients did something amazing: they became our best advocates, recommending us to their communities and close circles. That difficult part of the process turned into something beautiful because they were the ones who made it easier.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in wedding and quinceañera photography. These social events are where we focus most of our work and where we truly stand out. Of course, we also do studio portraits, family sessions, and other projects, but our main expertise lies in capturing weddings and quinceañeras.
What am I most proud of? Without a doubt, it’s what we’ve built. I love what I do, but none of this would have been possible without the support of the people around me, especially my wife, Paola. She has been essential to the growth of our business, managing the administrative side and client communication. When I hear clients express how great their experience was with us, I know we’re doing things right, and that fills me with pride. I’m also incredibly proud of my daughters, who are my biggest motivation. I want to show them that it’s possible to live off something you’re passionate about, and that drives me to give my best every day.
What sets us apart? Honestly, I try not to dwell on what makes us different because I believe we’re all a reflection of what we consume and the influences we adopt. However, if I had to point something out, I’d say it’s the quality of our work and the way we treat our clients. We don’t just deliver a product; we deliver an experience. I think that’s what truly makes the difference. Products can be found everywhere, but a memorable experience is unique, and that’s what we aim to provide.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Without a doubt, success is not something I can attribute solely to myself. I am convinced that much of what we have achieved is thanks to the people around me and those who have been a constant support on this journey. First and foremost, I owe everything to God. His guidance and blessings have been fundamental to where we are today.
After that, my immediate family holds a special place: my wife and daughters, who are my greatest motivation. Paola, my wife, has been my unwavering partner and the administrative heart of our business. Without her support and vision, none of this would have been possible. My daughters also inspire me every day, reminding me that effort and passion are essential to building something meaningful.
My parents, through their example and teachings, laid the foundation for who I am today. And especially my grandfather, Francisco, who left an indelible mark on my life. We lost him this year, and his absence has been difficult, but I carry his lessons with me: the importance of treating people warmly, always innovating, and projecting something new. He taught me how to care for clients, and that remains a cornerstone of our work.
I also want to acknowledge my team, who have understood and embraced the vision of our company. Some have come and gone, while others have stayed, but each one has contributed something valuable. I am deeply grateful for their commitment and for how they have made this mission their own.
One person who has greatly inspired me is the director of my church, Naasón Joaquín. His teachings about serving society, bearing witness to goodness, and leaving a positive mark on our community have been an important guide for me. This has influenced our philosophy as a business: we don’t just create photos or videos; we aim to leave a legacy and contribute to the well-being of those around us.
Finally, our clients hold a special place in this story. Seeing their emotional reactions when we deliver a video or a photograph, receiving their heartfelt messages months or even years later as they remember those important moments, is what drives us to keep moving forward. Knowing that our work transcends and becomes part of their family stories is an incomparable satisfaction.
In summary, this journey has been a collective effort, full of inspiration, hard work, and gratitude for every person who has contributed to this adventure.
