Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaime Dee.
Hi Jaime, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey really started in radio. In 2019, while earning my Master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park, I began working at a community radio station on campus. That’s where I fell in love with broadcasting and discovered my passion for connecting with people through media.
After graduating, I worked my way up through the industry, gaining experience with both Cumulus Radio and iHeartRadio. Those opportunities helped me develop my skills as an on-air personality and ultimately led to me hosting my own live morning radio show on KSHP AM 1400 & 107.1 FM.
Ironically, my music career was born through radio. In 2024, while covering Essence Festival, I had the opportunity to interview celebrity producer, songwriter, and artist Alright Slash from New Orleans. During our conversation, I joked that he had made so many other people famous and that he needed to make me a famous artist too. What he didn’t know was that becoming an artist had always been a dream of mine, but it was something I had kept private for most of my life.
Most people in entertainment have heard promises that never materialize, so when Alright Slash told me he could make it happen, I didn’t think much of it. However, after the interview, he gave me his personal number and invited me to the studio the very next day. I was surprised, but even then, I wasn’t sure if it was real. To my shock, he answered the phone, welcomed me into the studio, and we recorded what would become my first viral hit, “Roll With Me.”
That moment changed everything. What started as a joke during a radio interview turned into a career-defining opportunity. Since then, I’ve been balancing two worlds that I love, working as a radio personality and building a career as a viral recording artist. Both paths allow me to entertain, connect with people, and create experiences that bring audiences together, which is ultimately what I’ve always wanted to do.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. Both radio and music are incredibly competitive industries, and neither one offers a smooth path to success.
In radio, job security is almost nonexistent. Talent alone doesn’t guarantee stability because there are so many factors outside of your control. The industry has changed dramatically with the rise of podcasts, streaming services, Bluetooth integration in vehicles, and now AI. As audiences shift, companies have to make tough financial decisions, and talented people often find themselves laid off through no fault of their own. I’ve also learned that opportunities don’t always go to the most qualified person. Like any industry, relationships, office politics, and favoritism can sometimes play a bigger role than experience or talent.
As a Black man in media, I’ve also had moments where I’ve felt that representation at the highest levels of radio still has room to grow. That reality has motivated me to keep pushing forward and creating opportunities for myself rather than waiting for someone else to hand them to me.
The music industry comes with its own set of challenges. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that talent is only part of the equation. Building a music career requires significant resources. Marketing, content creation, influencer partnerships, public relations, advertising, and building a professional team all cost money. While there are occasional overnight success stories, most artists are investing heavily behind the scenes long before the public ever notices them.
Another challenge is realizing that your biggest supporters are not always the people you know personally. Early on, I assumed friends, family, and acquaintances would be the foundation of my audience, but I’ve learned that your true fan base is often made up of people you’ve never met. The challenge is finding ways to reach those people in an increasingly crowded digital world where algorithms largely determine who sees your content.
Despite all of that, I wouldn’t trade either journey. If anything, the obstacles have strengthened my determination. I’ve chosen two of the toughest industries imaginable, but I’ve never been afraid of hard work. I genuinely believe I’m building something special as a recording artist, and I also hope to continue growing as a radio personality. The road hasn’t been easy, but giving up has never been an option for me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I wear two hats professionally: I’m a radio personality and a viral recording artist. While those are two very different worlds, they both center around the same thing, entertaining people and creating moments that connect with audiences.
As a radio personality, I specialize in conducting engaging interviews, creating compelling content, and bringing energy to every platform I’m on. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to interview and work with some incredible names in entertainment, including Kandi Burruss, Dr. Phil, Megan Thee Stallion, Natalie Nunn, and Cardi B. Those experiences have allowed me to build a reputation as someone who can connect with people from all walks of life and create memorable conversations.
As a recording artist, I specialize in making fun, energetic music that brings people together. My sound blends Hip-Hop and New Orleans Bounce influences, and I’ve built my brand around creating records that make people feel good, dance, and enjoy themselves. In a time when so much music is focused on division, I pride myself on creating music that encourages unity and fun.
What I’m most proud of is the impact my work has had in such a short period of time. My music has reached listeners across the United States and around the world, including places like Switzerland, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom. I’ve had songs go viral, performed on major stages, and shared lineups with well-known artists such as Saucy Santana. I’ve also headlined my own shows and events, which is something I never take for granted.
What sets me apart is that I didn’t come into music through the traditional route. I built my name first as a media personality, and that gave me a unique understanding of audiences, storytelling, branding, and entertainment. Whether I’m behind a microphone interviewing celebrities or on stage performing my own music, my goal is always the same: to create an experience that people remember.
I may not be a household name yet, but I’ve already accomplished things that many people spend a lifetime chasing. More importantly, I feel like I’m just getting started. I truly believe my biggest achievements are still ahead of me, and I’m committed to continuing to grow as both a radio personality and recording artist for years to come.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
People often talk about luck, but I don’t believe luck is what got me here. I believe my success has been the result of hard work, consistency, dedication, faith, and refusing to quit when things got difficult.
Have opportunities come my way? Absolutely. But opportunities only matter if you’re prepared for them. When I got the chance to work in radio, I had already put in the time studying journalism and developing my skills. When the opportunity came to record my first song with Alright Slash, I was ready to step into that moment because I had spent years believing in myself, even when nobody else knew that becoming an artist was one of my dreams.
I’ve experienced setbacks, disappointments, and situations that could have made me walk away from both radio and music. Instead, I’ve relied on my work ethic, my motivation, and my faith in God to keep moving forward. Every accomplishment I’ve achieved has come from showing up, putting in the work, and trusting the process even when I couldn’t see the outcome.
If there’s one thing I’m most proud of, it’s that I never allowed obstacles, rejection, or industry challenges to convince me to stop. I truly believe that God opens doors, but it’s our responsibility to have the courage and discipline to walk through them. That’s the mindset that has carried me throughout my career and continues to drive me today.
