Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamahl King.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jamahl. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story is an amazing story of chance and opportunity. After finishing Morehouse with a degree in communication I assumed I’d follow that path forever. My degree, my parents didn’t hesitate to tell me, was very expensive and after all my hard work it only made sense to stay on that path. I found though, that real life is sometimes an even better teacher than a bunch of professors in front of a chalkboard.
Shortly after starting in the Communications field and working with a local television I realized that entry-level pay for that industry left much to be desired. I transitioned quickly into Sales just to be practical. While working for this huge corporate entity I found myself volunteering to plan events for my fellow employees and some of the bigwigs at our firm. I started to make a name for myself and then one day a co-worker simply wondered aloud why I’d never pursued a career in event planning since I seemed to so good at it. That outward validation was exactly what I needed for things to click.
I began facilitating events part-time and ended up making acquaintances with Keith Sweat, a legendary singer & producer. After that, everything blew up. The music industry6, in Atlanta at that time, was flourishing and I had the opportunity to work with all of the biggest names in the city. I produced events for TLC, Lefteye, Usher, Jermaine Durpi, 112, Jagged Edge, Outkast, Organize Noize…it was an amazing time to start a business.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like I said, my business became known very well in the entertainment industry. But with that said, when changing tastes in music came about, we quickly had to learn that we couldn’t pull all of our eggs in one basket. We had to diversify our clientele and roll with the punches. Thankfully, my background in corporate event planning during my sales work came in handy. We still have an amazing relationship and do work in the entertainment industry but we have more of a balance now.
Please tell us about S.T.E.P.S. Event Planning.
We are a full-service event planning firm. We have a well-respected staff skilled in handling everything from event conception to completion. We book talent, engage in creative design, event staffing, vendor contracting, really just about anything that would get the party started so to speak.
I definitely think our flexibility sets us apart; the way we can come in and pick up the pieces no matter where you are in your planning journey. I’m also quite proud of S.T.E.P.S.’ reputation that precedes many of the interactions we have. Our clients know to expect a level of creativity as well as professionalism and we strive to remain true to that.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started earlier! I love what I do and I hope to continue on this journey for a very long time.
Everything I’ve learned has kept me growing and helped me to get better. I wouldn’t really change anything.
