Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamila Sampson.
Hi Jamila, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always loved the performing arts. My background is in theater, so I’ve spent years studying performance, storytelling, stagecraft, and what makes an audience truly connect with a show. Over time, I realized I wasn’t just interested in music—I was interested in creating experiences that leave people feeling like they were part of something special and well-crafted.
That passion eventually led me to form Band Adu in 2019. I’ve been a lifelong fan of Sade’s music and was surprised by what felt like a significant gap in the market. Here was one of the most iconic, influential, and timeless artists of the last four decades, yet there were very few bands dedicated to celebrating her catalog in a meaningful way. Sade’s music has a sophistication and emotional depth that transcends generations. These aren’t just songs people remember—they’re songs that become part of the soundtrack of their lives.
I wanted to create a band that honored that legacy while delivering the kind of polished, elevated live experience that the music deserves. We were fortunate enough to start gigging soon after we started but played our last gig (for a while) just a few weeks before the world shut down due to the pandemic.
Like many performers, we suddenly found ourselves facing an uncertain future. It would have been easy for the band to dissolve, and honestly, many groups did. Instead, something unexpected happened. The core of the band stayed together.
Over the years, we’ve experienced plenty of ups and downs. We’ve navigated scheduling challenges, personnel changes, difficult gigs, and all the realities that come with building a band. Through it all, we’ve developed a connection that goes far beyond showing up and playing music together.
We’ve celebrated life’s milestones together, including performing at one of our band member’s weddings. We’ve supported each other through some of life’s hardest moments, rallying around a bandmate after the loss of his sister. Behind the scenes, the spouses, families, and friends have been relentlessly supportive. Their encouragement, patience, and belief in the vision have helped sustain us through the inevitable challenges that come with balancing music, careers, and family life.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the caliber of musicians who choose to be part of this project. These are players who could work in virtually any artist’s band. They are incredibly talented professionals, and the fact that they continue to invest their time, energy, and creativity into Band Adu is something I never take for granted. It’s been an incredible experience growing alongside them.
What started as an idea to celebrate Sade’s music has evolved into something much bigger. We’ve built a community around timeless music, memorable live experiences, and a shared commitment to excellence. Looking back, I’m grateful we weathered those early years because the journey has been every bit as rewarding as the performances themselves.
And honestly, I feel like we’re just getting started. The vision continues to grow, and I’m excited to see where the next chapter takes us.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We formed in 2019 and were on roll, booking gigs, selling out shows. Then, we play one last gig (for a while) a few weeks before the pandemic shut down the live entertainment industry. For a brand-new band, that could have easily been the end.
Beyond that, building a tribute band around Sade presented its own challenges. We weren’t jumping on a trend—we were creating something we felt was missing. We’ve had to prove there was an audience for a high-quality live celebration of Sade’s music. Not to mention Sade is a very elusive artist!
Like any band, we’ve also dealt with scheduling challenges, personnel changes, and the balancing act of careers, family, and music. The fact that so many of our core members have remained together since the beginning says a lot about the commitment everyone has to the project and to each other.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is making the most of the time we’re given.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become much more intentional about where I spend my energy and who I spend it with. Whether it’s my career, my friendships, my family, or Band Adu, I want to invest in things that have real meaning and lasting value.
I also believe in pursuing excellence. If you’re going to do something, do it well. Our audiences have countless entertainment options competing for their attention, so I think it’s important to show up prepared, deliver quality, and give people a reason to leave the house.
Life is too short for mediocrity. I’d rather spend my time building something special with people I respect than simply going through the motions.
