Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Holland.
Jason, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started photography back in high school, taking photos of friends and family and even some local bands that I was friends with. I went to college for graphic design and took some photography classes and became even more passionate about photography. A few years ago, thanks to social media, more and more friends saw my progress happening in real time and eventually, real paying work came out of that.
I began doing weddings for friends but now I get work from complete strangers which is great. I’ve shot everything from concerts (my first love) to action sports and now for mostly weddings and lifestyle type shoots.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think anything worth pursuing isn’t easy. I have experienced some struggles along the way, from breaking gear that I couldn’t afford to begin with. To showing up to shoot a wedding with a 102 fever with no option but to make it happen. I have dealt with some depression, lost interest and experienced burn out and felt like walking away from photography.
Then that email or phone call comes in with some exciting new opportunity and I snap out of it. I love it and as cliche, as it sounds, photography has given my life purpose so I can’t just walk away from something I think I am supposed to be doing that has given me so much.
Please tell us about Jason Holland Photography.
I am a lifestyle, wedding and elopement photographer mostly. I am a little all over the road with the work that I post on Instagram but I think my work is aesthetically identifiable as mine, regardless of the subject I am shooting. I am most proud of just having a company.
I never thought I was good enough to get real paying work. It is pretty great to now make money doing something that I used to do for free for so long. I don’t know too many accountants that just like doing taxes on the weekends, just for fun.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have an identical twin brother and an older brother and sister, so any memory involving them. Probably something outside in the country that cost zero dollars to do. I didn’t grow up with a lot of “stuff” or lavish vacations and trips so all of my memories are playing in the mud, fishing and hunting with my brothers and sister in South Carolina.
It’s kinda crazy that I even like Atlanta, considering where I grew up.
