Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Mejia.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Juan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am originally from Medellin, Colombia and migrated to Georgia in 2001. I graduated from Kennesaw State University with a BBA in International Business. My professional journey started in the legal sector working with law firms in the Metro-Atlanta area, eventually leaving the legal sector to manage a political campaign. I still continue to assist candidates and elected officials. I am an advocate for citizens becoming involved and getting to know their elected officials.
After managing a campaign in 2012, I joined a national food and beverage chain in their Atlanta headquarters. During my five-year tenure there, I oversaw the southeast region and the in-house production company. My last project involved the expansion into Florida. The site was over twenty thousand square feet and featured six food and beverage concepts under one roof. That is where I discovered passion for commercial real estate.
I reside in Buckhead and am an avid traveler (more so pre-COVID). I love exploring new places and learning about different cultures. Knowledge is power and I work to further my knowledge through continuing personal and professional development. I love giving back to the community and serve in various positions to organizations in Metro-Atlanta. Some of the organizations include: United Way, Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Latino Community Fund, and the Atlanta Ballet. Through my professional and volunteer efforts, I work closely with community leaders in order to empower the next generation like those that took the time to help me!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I landed in the land of opportunities with my single mother and dreams. We did not have much money, speak English or know the culture. However, my mother has always said, “only be afraid of being afraid.” Her sacrifices allowed me to be the person I am today. I have lived all the typical stages of life…just a bit early. In high school, I got my first job at a law firm. I did most of my college classes at night and worked full time during that period. That translated to being the youngest in all my friend groups. At first, it was weird but they were able to provide so much wisdom along the way and today, I am most thankful for being the youngest in the room. Perfect example of that is friends encouraging me to buy my first piece of real estate at the young age of twenty-two.
There are many obstacles that, with a strong support system, I have been able to overcome. Many community organizations were able to provide me with support as a young teen. That is where I developed my passion to volunteer and become more involved in community organizations. I look forward to the hurdles that are to come and to finding ways to surpass them. While my journey has not been smooth, I would not change it for anything. Every hurdle crossed has taught me a lesson, a lesson that I hope I can help someone else not make that mistake.
Please tell us about JCM Ventures.
In 2016, my vision of seeing other entrepreneurs grow and succeed was brought to life when I founded JCM Ventures to aid entrepreneurship and scale businesses. Through JCM Ventures, I assisted clients in formation, site selection, operations, and management consulting. As I saw the different needs of the community, I began to develop different companies that could fill the gaps for the community. One of the gaps he saw was the need for marketing, real and honest marketing. Eventually, I sold that company to refocus on this end goal, empowering entrepreneurs. As my clients grew and needed to expand, I went on to obtaining my real estate license in order to provide full support to my client’s needs.
Today I focus on growing the KW Commercial division at the Buckhead market center to better serve our Metro-Atlanta area business owners and investors. I am involved with the Atlanta Commercial Board of Realtors and the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Being fully bilingual in Spanish, I can use my diverse background to serve my clients. I specialize in office and industrial spaces in Metro-Atlanta but have an amazing team that can help in the other commercial spaces as well. Our market center has amazing associates to assist with traditional and luxury homes as well.
Professionally, the team was able to relocate a Central American consulate. It was one of the more challenging deals as it’s a foreign government entity and additional red tape from both the U.S. and the country’s local federal agencies. Now their new facility is over two times bigger and more capable to serve all its citizens for many years to come! Personally, I am most proud of the company’s commitment to give back to the community. A percentage of the profits that come into the company gets put back into the community through programs, grants, and charitable contributions.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Favorite childhood memories revolve around family time. Growing up in Colombia, you would always be around all your cousins. On holiday weekends, we would all go out to the countryside home. That involved daytime horseback riding and evening dancing with my aunts. Sometimes if grandma was sneaky enough, she would get us to gamble a bit with board games! Those memories will stay with me forever, even now…years and years later, after moving to a new country.
