Today we’d like to introduce you to Kecia Wilson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My passion for weddings began back in school when I took a summer job at Bloomingdale’s in the China & Crystal department. It created within me a deep love of fine and beautiful things, paired with a true caring for engaged couples and the families that surround them. These two driving forces guided me throughout my career, from an internship with Lillian August at the threshold of her success, to many years in various capacities at Mikasa Tabletop, to Registry Manager at Lenox and Perimeter Bloomingdale’s, where I planned and executed amazing bridal events, and worked with engaged couples all day, every day.
After starting a family and realizing that I needed to be closer to home, I was thrilled to be offered a job at the Atlanta Wedding Loft, right here in my beloved town of Decatur.
It was there that I created so many beautiful relationships with the best wedding professionals in Atlanta, with whom I work so closely today. My decision to start my own business came from a combination of two important things; my desire to delve even more deeply into the world of weddings in Atlanta as a planner, and my need as a mother to be more available to my children. Little did I know how quickly and solidly my business would grow, nor how blessed I would feel waking up every morning doing what I love. I have to say I’ve never been more happy and successful in my career as I am today!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Luckily the difficulties I’ve faced have been fairly easy to resolve. Mostly the typical fluctuations in business, where at times I’m not sure where my next client will come from, and other times I feel overwhelmed with how much I have on my plate. But it’s a simple matter of turning to my support team and allowing them to “talk me off the ledge!” Both my husband and my mom are experts at saying, “Kecia, you know the phone will ring tomorrow, and there will be a wonderful bride on the line who is just meant for you!” or “Sweetheart, just breathe and do one thing at a time. Make your list, check it off and you’ll be fine!” And it always is. Not to mention my kids, who often look at me in innocent joy and say, “Mom, you’re the best wedding planner in the world!!” For these people, I am eternally grateful.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Three Little Birds Weddings story. Tell us more about the business.
We named my business Three Little Birds after the Bob Marley song of the same name, because we trust that in all things, “every little thing is gonna be alright…” These lyrics and their sentiment speak directly to the spirit of my company, and how I run it. I’m known to be easy-going yet professional, and I believe that there is much benefit to smiling, staying calm, being kind, and treating everyone across my path as an honored participant. This is what I’m known for, and it’s also what I’m most proud of. I simply love people, and want everyone to be happy! And when, after a wedding celebration is over, I talk to colleagues, or hear from families, all gushing with thanks, praise and elation, it makes my heart swell and I know I’ve done my job well.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I often blink during the day and say to myself, “How on earth did I get so lucky!?” I get to work with amazing people, with my loved ones right by my side, doing the thing I love most in the world ~ creating happiness and beauty ~ all while learning and growing every single day. How did this happen for me? You bet it’s been luck! I love the notion of good fortune, and when it turns my way, I grab it and ride it for everything I’ve got!
That’s what opens important doors; believing in the unseen, trusting in the unknown, sensing that something significant is about to happen and leaning in.
