Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth Everett.
Growing up, Chef K. Ray was always fascinated with food and cooking. He showed talent in the kitchen at a young age after learning from his grandmother, Dora. Upon separating from the Armed Forces, K. Ray returned to his hometown of St. Louis, MO and began working in his first professional kitchen while attending Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School, where he broadened his knowledge of food. In the search for greater opportunities to grow in his craft, K. Ray began cooking in top restaurants and catering St Louis.
His resume also includes honing his skills with legendary chef Josh Galliano at Monarch and Rex Hale at 360. K. Ray is an ardent believer in using farm-fresh, locally sourced ingredients and not afraid to bring in products from around the world as it is the best way to draw global inspiration when creating his works of art.
Before pursuing a culinary career, with an eye for detail, K. Ray aspired toward becoming an engineer. His creative upbringing is reflected in K. Ray’s approach to cooking, which he very much considers an art. “Every plate is a blank canvas,” says K. Ray. “Chefs must be able to control brain function like no other, including everything from organizing from their prep to assessing the menu and knowing their audience. I love the process.”
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth ride at all as a black male in a field that doesn’t typically produce top chefs that are black as been rough. Often times I have been overlooked for certain positions and opportunities because I am black, until I actually get into the kitchen and perform.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, the only thing I would change is starting earlier instead of going into the military.
