Meet Liam Banks of Thunder LB3 Lacrosse in Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liam Banks.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Thunder and LB3 Lacrosse have been the leading instructional companies in ATL for the past 10 years. In January of 2017, Thunder and LB3 Consolidated to create Thunder LB3 Lacrosse. Both companies started with a core focus on coaching fundamentals and providing players competitive teams to compete at tournaments. As each company evolved, the level of play greatly increased in the Atlanta area. Since 2014, Thunder LB3 has committed over 100 players to Division I colleges and another 100 players to Division II and III schools. Thunder LB3 combined is the clear leader in lacrosse in the state of Georgia.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In any business, there are struggles while growing. The main issue early on was the talent pool was not as large so, Atlanta never had 1 program that represented the best players in Atlanta. With the consolidation of Thunder and LB3 Lacrosse we are truly putting the best players from the Greater Atlanta area on a team to compete against the best clubs in the country. Before the consolidation, neither team was able to enter into the prestigious National Lacrosse Federation which consist of the best clubs in the country. Thunder LB3 is now a member of the NLF and represents the State of Georgia.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Thunder LB3 Lacrosse story. Tell us more about the business.
Our specialization is teaching the game of lacrosse. We work with players of all age levels and skill levels. We want to always strengthen the herd and introduce the game to more boys and girls. Our focus is on teaching fundamentals, stick skills, lacrosse IQ and ultimately develop a life long love of the game. We work with both boys and girls and have an incredibly talented staff that is committed to development. The Thunder LB3 Warehouse, a 5000-square foot indoor training facility located in Marietta. At the warehouse, we do private lessons and small group training. Our company also does camps, clinics, league, tournaments and special events which includes the Cobb County Classic which brings in the best college programs in the country to play at Kennesaw State University. Thunder LB3 was also active in bringing Major League Lacrosse to Atlanta.

While all that, keeps us busy our true passion is our Club program. We have an elite program that competes at the best recruiting events of the summer. We are a proud member of the National Lacrosse Federation and will compete for a National Championship in July. Our Regional programs are located in East Cobb, North Fulton, Buckhead, Gwinnett and Peachtree City (Southside). These programs are local select programs that encourage players to compete on a regional level and develop through our Thunder LB3 Curriculum. The Atlanta Storm is our girls program which operates out of East Cobb. We have a great group of female coaches who are teaching young girls to be strong women both on and off the field.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think timing has helped out in our business. We are in a growing market and have been able to help influence the way the industry has grown in a positive way. We don’t look at things as good luck or bad luck. If something negative happens that we react and try and fix the problem. When the snow storm hit in December and we had our annual tournament many people would have said that’s bad luck. The fields were covered with snow and everybody thought we were going to cancel, it would be impossible to clear the fields. For us, it was an opportunity to show our consumer what we were capable of doing. We shoveled fields, got volunteers to help and had our tournament. We took a negative and turned it into a positive and we are constantly challenging ourselves to work with this mindset.

My son who is currently in 7th grade, has been playing lacrosse now for five years. As recent as one year ago we joined the Thunder LB3 family and has been nothing but first class for both of us. He wanted to take his game to the next (best) level and with no complaints we found our home!
Liam Banks with his professional team along side him, takes great care of his players from all age groups in helping them understand the game of lacrosse on and off the field. My son has had nothing but a great experience so far and we both feel Liam has a game plan here in Atlanta with the future being bright for all Lacrosse players!
