Meet Dominique Woods of Liv Fanci Nailtique in Birmingham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Woods.

Dominique, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I graduated from The University of Alabama at Birmingham with a BS degree in Business Management 2012. My concentration was in Human Resources, in which I was unable to find an internship or job. People told me to be patient and continue to look, I decided to go to nail school. It took me nine months to complete. After passing the necessary tests, I became a licensed manicurist. While in nail school, I was a retail manager, which also trained me to operate a business. When I completed school, I was already equipped with all the tools needed to begin my business! I marketed myself by going to networking events and passing out flyers and before I knew it, I had gained a full clientele. I was featured in the Birmingham Times in 2017, became an educator for Nail Systems International (NSI) in 2017, became a certified Nail Artist for Swarovski in 2018, created my You Tube channel (Dominique Liv Fanci) in 2019 and I just launched my own cuticle oil September 2020. Owning and operating my own business is the hardest thing I have ever done, but I will not change it for anything.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some of the struggles with owning my own business has been keeping personal funds separated from business funds. But the main obstacle is attracting almost perfect clients. The almost perfect client follows all of the rules and is simply a pleasure to service when the step over the threshold of the salon.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I have a nail business in which I specialize in healthy nails and hands. I am known for nail art and precision shaping. I service powder and liquid clients as well as natural nail clients! And yes, I’m a black nail tech that does feet!! One of the things that set me apart from other nail techs is continued education. I am constantly trying to learn new techniques.

What were you like growing up?
If I had to start over, I would have never gone to a university. I would have started nail school at the age of 16 and I would have been completed by graduation. I would be farther in my nail career with no college debt!
