Today we’d like to introduce you to Lovelace Boafo.
Lovelace, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was younger, I was never a fan of make-up because of how my dad would talk down on it. He would always say that I should embrace the face God has given to me. It wasn’t until my older sister came to America from Ghana and introduced me to that lifestyle. I started to understand why women loved make up so much, and I too started to love it as well. Wearing make-up isn’t about hiding the face God has given you, it’s about embracing & amplifying the features God has blessed you with. It’s about having confidence & being able to walk into any room feeling like a “baddie b”! Melvina’s Minks was created so that women can feel that way on a regular! Specifically, dark skin women living in a world that constantly brings us down.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It the beginning, it was pretty tough. I was working at Burger King & was put in my first three paychecks into the start of Melvina’s Minks. I started out with only lashes & four months later, I ended up selling out all my products! I prayed, cried, & thanked God so much! I then decided to expand & release more products & since then, everything has been a smooth ride.
Melvina’s Minks – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Melvina’s Minks started off as an eyelash company. It then expanded to a cosmetic brand with a variety of products such as lashes, eyeliner, lip gloss, eyeshadow, and make up brushes. I just recently became a certified lash technician, so those services have also been added to the company’s name. I am most proud of the company’s versatility. I am open to adding a variety of services to my brand so that it can cater to a variety of people & not just one specific group.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career was when I dropped lip gloss for the first time. I would say it’s my proudest moment because I was so nervous that it wouldn’t do well being that lip gloss is so common & anyone can get lip gloss anywhere. My lip gloss tubes included a mirror and an LED light, which made it very unique & convenient. I prayed before I released the gloss, went to sleep, & woke up to my lip gloss selling out! I was so overwhelmed with joy & continued to thank God for all that he was doing with my business.
