Meet Lucy Lee of Set Your Hair Free in Athens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Lee.

Lucy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated high school in 2005 with every intention of working in the film industry. I was lucky to be referred by one of my teachers to work as a PA over the summer. While on set, I had the privilege of meeting a hairstylist and makeup artist that changed everything for me. This woman was traveling the world and living her wildest dreams by making people look and feel beautiful. I had never considered cosmetology a career option but was completely inspired by her passion and creativity. After a year as a Mass Media major at Valdosta State University and a semester at Georgia Perimeter, I eventually transferred to Roffler Moler to get my Masters in Cosmetology. I love the variety I get from doing hair and I am so thankful for how it has evolved into a career for me. The hair industry is always changing and has allowed me to experience life in a way that I never imagined.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing in life is easier than giving up, I wouldn’t be the first hairstylist to say that I have considered other career options besides doing hair. It’s hard on your body, it can be emotionally draining and very inconsistent financially. I am a single mother and at times I find it hard to juggle my career and mom duties but at the end of the day, I truly enjoy what I do. I still find it fascinating that I am able to play with people’s hair for a living and I am able to make a positive difference in the way that they see themselves.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a freelance hairstylist that specializes in making people look and feel beautiful. I am always looking for new ways to explore the hair industry and I am open to working in all fields that it encompasses. I strive to offer a unique and well rounded experience to each client and consider it a blessing to be able to do so. I have always loved corrective color situations, men’s haircuts and styling hair for weddings etc but I am hoping to transition into more film work eventually.

I am trained as a Moroccanoil educator and thoroughly enjoy teaching clients about how to use products to achieve their hair goals. In my career, I have obtained a wide range of experience that includes styling hair for commercials, photo shoots and multiple weddings. I started my career as a color specialist for Toni and Guy and eventually transitioned into a full service stylist. I was lucky to be one of the original stylist on the team that opened Drybar hair salon in Buckhead and cherish the time that I spent there. I like to believe that I have a very well rounded experience in my career so far and I am looking forward to seeing what adventures and learning experiences I will find in 2018.

What were you like growing up?
I have always been outside of the box and preferred the creative side of life. I was a quiet kid but I eventually transitioned into a rambunctious teenager. I went to 3 different high schools so, I was forced to be outside of my comfort zone often and I am thankful for the perspective on life that gave me. I have always loved music, art and theatre and at one point, I was hoping life would turn out like a Doris Day movie.
