Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyrique Tucker.
Hi Lyrique, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Lyrique Mykaela Tucker, I was born January 23, 2004 in Houston, Texas. My story is similar to a lot of people’s but how I overcame my adversities makes mine stand out even more. I’ve been through a lot whether it’s living in homeless shelters, growing up in a toxic household or dealing with depression and anxiety but in 2016 my life was put into a different perspective.
My father and uncle were murdered two weeks apart when I was only 12 years old. July 4th & July 20th, 2016 are days I’ll never forget. Shortly after losing my dad, my mother put herself into a mental hospital…during that time I felt like I had honestly lost both of my parents… I went through a very depressing stage in my life. I didn’t eat for months, I barely slept I just stayed in my room until I couldn’t take it anymore. I started getting back into the things I loved (basketball, track & school) and it made my everyday life easier. Using those sports and activities to keep my mind off losing the people I cared about helped me a lot because I was using my hurt and anger and putting it towards something good rather than finding trouble. A year after my father passed, I started my first business. The Raw Collection, An affordable Houston-based Hair Company. I was 13 years old with $0 and a heart. My mom opened my first bank account and from there, I built my first website using big cartel! I was so young I honestly couldn’t keep up with both middle school and running a business so I eventually had to take a pause.
However, the end of my sophomore year something told me I needed to graduate high school early. I took it and ran with it, I talked to my counselors and immediately got on track to graduate my junior year. My first day of junior/senior year came and everything got real! I had a total of 13 classes and we were in the middle of the pandemic so school was mainly online. I was excited though, I knew God had a different plan for me. June 13th, 2021 I graduated a whole year early with a 4.3 GPA & a full ride to Georgia State University. My friends & family celebrated me and I told them give me a year and I’d come back better than I left. A month before moving to Georgia from Texas I started my second business… The Lace Bar. and a special thanks to my friend Taijah because she pushed me to become the amazing business owner I am today. I get so many questions asking me, “how did you build your clientele so fast”, “how did you become so successful” there was so many sleepless nights, I was posting even when I didn’t get any likes, I was walking around campus and my student apartment telling everyone I did hair to get my name out. Somebody once said “you can’t teach hustle” and I agree, you have to be willing to put in the time and dedication to get where you want. You can’t expect it to be handed to you and I never did. Within my first two weeks of being a hairstylist, I had my first influencer client. August 14th, 2021 at 17 years old I moved in ATL, GA.
My first week in Georgia, I had no ring light, I didn’t even have all my products but I was able to take my first client & my second influencer all within one week and I kept pushing until people knew my name. I’ve had to pleasure of working with many celebrities such as Molly Brazy, Shekinah Anderson, Lakeyah, Koran Hawthorn & many more. My first fully booked month was in November of 2021 I was so happy I just kept thanking God for blessing me and those around me. Within my first 8-9 months, I made my first 6 figures. My platforms were growing and everything began falling into place. My Instagram (@thelacebarr) had over 24k supporters and my TikTok (lyriquemykaela) has over 47k supporters and I couldn’t be more grateful. I’m the first female in my immediate family to make 6 figures, especially at 18 and although my journey hasn’t been easy, I’m grateful for the journey. I plan to be a millionaire by 21.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I definitely wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road. Within every path, they’ll be obstacles; it’s up to you whether or not you’re going to withstand those obstacles. I think my biggest competition was myself, when I mastered one thing, I was so ready to figure out what I could do next or how I could make it better. I say that to say I always felt like I wasn’t doing enough so I would overwork myself even as a kid and my body has suffered a lot from it. As a hairstylist, we’re on our feet all day every day sometimes we often don’t get breaks. There’s days I didn’t get a chance to eat and sometimes it would be back-to-back days. Also with me being in school planning and my time management were terrible, it was hard trying to keep up with school and building my empire.
We’ve been impressed with The Lace Bar LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I chose the name “The Lace Bar” to brand myself and my business. I didn’t choose a regular name like “hair by” , “styled by” because I knew I wanted to be global The Lace Bar is located in the heart of Atlanta. Minutes from Atlantic station. I specialize in lace installations and providing a luxury experience. While proving luxurious tresses as well from The Raw Collection. I started doing hair when I was 17 and I’m now 18 and I’ve built such a big platform. I know that me being so young and consistent with my business, I stand out from a lot of others because I show grit & determination. I let others know, whether their younger or older that anything is possible.
What does success mean to you?
I define success by reaching the goals you’ve set for yourself. You don’t have to be a millionaire to be successful, success can come in many ways.
