Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret McManus.
Margaret, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Window covering distributors was established by Bill and Jean Davis, my parents in 1973.
We began as fabricators of roller shades selling wholesale to the trade. My father handled sales and marketing while my mother worked in the day to day operations. My parents built this company on honesty, integrity, customer service and top-quality products. These are the principles they instilled in me. My mother retired in 1989 and my father retired in 1991. I’ve run the company ever since.
In 2014 we acquired our local competition, shady ladies, and began manufacturing custom roman shades and selling both to the trade and retail. We now offer full service window covering sales.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We have had our set of challenges, as any company does. We were particularly challenged during the great recession of 2007 through 2010. With housing and commercial real estate slowing down, our business slowed exponentially. We made provisions by employees voluntarily scaling down hours of production to help keep costs to a minimum. We were able to work on terms with our suppliers and customers to keep operations running smoothly.
As a minority female owned business, it took a few decades for our corporate vendors to believe in a female run company. Through long term diligence, determination and making our voice heard, their attitudes began to change. They now know that we are as strong as any male owned establishment and we are now treated with the same respect as any contender in this business.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
WCD is a manufacturer of custom and contract roller and roman shades. We specialize in C.O.M. (customer’s own material) fabric laminated roller shades and roman shades. In fact, we are one of a few left in the US that still offer fabric laminated roller shades. We offer many types of operating systems, from cordless to motorized. All of our products are manufactured by hand in the united states. We’ve been instrumental in bringing manufacturing to the US by partnering with a European company to produce a line of roller shades for the home depot store. We also work closely with the entertainment industry and have since the ’70s all over the USA and Canada.
We differ from other window treatment manufactures because we offer excellent customer service, paying close attention to each individual order, we offer great turnaround time and an exquisite product. We stand behind every product manufactured by WCD and offer full warranties. We’re set apart from other manufacturers because we work closely with our customers to ensure their product is manufactured correctly to their specifications and design.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in a middle-class family in the suburbs of Atlanta. I attended public schools, enjoying sports and dance. I was a ballerina for 7 years and I played softball at our local park for 5. I was also a cheerleader in high school. I became interested in fitness and started to run and exercise. I had a real passion for helping others achieve good health, so I became a certified fitness instructor. I still teach fitness today.
I also had a passion for my parent’s window treatment business. I started working for them when I was 13 years old. I’ve been with the company ever since.

What a wonderful article. You and WCD are certainly deserving! I personally have sold your products during a period of 40 years. My parents and I had a business, Melba’s Interiors, Inc., located in Hueytown, AL 35023. We closed in 2002 and I continued with two other window covering stores and have sold your products. Now, I am with Suell Construction, Inc., dba: Hill’s Carpet and Floor Coverings. We have your sample book and any opportunity too, we present and are proud to tell the customer’s that WCD is a wonderful business and people with whom we are happy to be affiliated. Many more wonderful and successful years!
