Meet Margie Merritt of Selfish Candles in South Fulton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Margie Merritt.

Margie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a journalist by trade so during my off time I was always searching for a way to disconnect and care for myself. Candles became one of my favorite items to have and they really helped to aid in my self-care and relaxation. Eventually I was spending so much time, energy, and money searching for new candles that I’d become somewhat of a candle snob and decided maybe I should try to just make some scents that I’d like to have. I definitely didn’t know how difficult it would be to blend a scent that I’d want to have burning in my house. After many many months of testing and smelling, Selfish Candles was born. We’ve launched spring and summer scents and are now gearing up for fall.

Has it been a smooth road?
Ha! I wish. I thought making candles was so simple but let me tell you…. it’s harder than it looks. As a first time business owner there’s the learning curve that comes along with that. Along with having to teach myself how to make the candles and blend the scents. It’s difficult and there are many nights where I wonder why in the world, I’m doing this, but I love hearing how happy people are when they get their candles so it’s worth it.

Please tell us more about your business.
Selfish candles gives you everything you want in a luxury candle but at an affordable price. Our scents are inspired by nature, travel, and the smells of home. We use 100% soy wax and lead-free cotton wicks for an eco-friendly, clean burn. We are most proud of our scents. Right now, for summer we are highlighting citrus and floral notes with a Grapefruit Champagne candle that will remind you of brunch with your friends.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love how friendly and supportive everyone in Atlanta is. We’re surrounded by such successful black people that it’s always inspiring me to push harder and further. I’d have to say the traffic is what I like the least.
