Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Boylan.
Marissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After several years in hospitality, I decided to leave it for a “real” job but quickly realized the 9-5 thing is not for me. While in between jobs and trying to figure out what’s next, my sister approached me about doing meal prep for her. I have always had a passion for cooking, and like my Nona, wanting to feed everyone, so I decided to give it a try. After the first week of meals, she told me, “this is what you should be doing.” I was reluctant at first. The idea of starting my own business was terrifying, especially since I’m not a formally trained chef. So, my sister decided to get things started for me and she did an IG post, from a client’s perspective, and that’s how I got my first, real client
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It often feels like I’m flying a plane, while at the same time, repairing it. The toughest part is learning on the job- figuring out how to run a business. But as I learn, things seem to fall into place on their own.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Home Sweet Yum – what should we know?
Home Sweet Yum is a weekly meal delivery service and small catering. I like to say I specialize in homemade. I feel like nowadays, a home cooked meal is a luxury, so that’s what I want to deliver.
Every week, I create a new base menu, and will then customize to fit whatever your dietary needs/preferences are. For example- like spaghetti & meatballs with choice of pasta or zucchini noodles, choice of traditional meatball or vegan.
I’m most proud of the impact I’ve made on some of my clients’ lives. They all have different needs with their diets, and either don’t have the time and/or don’t know how to cook, but can now enjoy a home cooked meal, in their homes
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Yesss!!! My family has been immensely supportive- especially sister for initiating everything and continually helping with marketing. And my amazing boyfriend for putting up with me always making a mess in the kitchen and being my official taster. Also, all the incredible women I’ve recently at the James Beard Foundation’s Owning It Event, and Stefanie Diaz of WOE- a women’s networking group. They all have been there when I’ve had questions, needed help figuring things out.
