Meet Matthew Jacoby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Jacoby.

Matthew, before we jump into specific questions about your art, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am originally from McDonough, Georgia. I’ve been living in and around Atlanta for the past four years while pursuing my fine art degree from Georgia State University. In about a month’s time, I’ll have the degree and will continue my efforts to get my art into more exhibitions and to participate in artist’s residencies. My long term goal is to earn a living off of just my artwork.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say it’s been smooth enough so far. I try to live as stress-free as is possible. Creating art can feel like a burden at times but I just try to push through it. One of the biggest challenges has been attempting to constantly create better work. It is easy to get into a cycle of putting more and more pressure on yourself to succeed. At the end of the day, though, I have no clue what succeeding really looks like. Therefore I just keep living and enjoying life to the best of my abilities. It seems to be all that one can do.

We’d love to hear more about your art.
I create art. Primarily two-dimensional art. Drawings, paintings, and prints. I create pretty varied work. Ranging from abstract, surreal, representational, all the way to I don’t even know what you’d call it. Weirdness maybe. Frequently I have been interested in creating meticulous and tedious work but I also make very loose and expressionistic pieces. When it comes to pride and what sets me apart? I like to think that I am a pretty normal person who works very hard.
