Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele Miller.
Michele, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I retired from Marietta School System in 2007, and worked contract for a year. In 2008, I took the step to open The Communication Spot, LLC. It was bold to purchase a property, but it has been the best decision. The therapy rooms are able to provide a quiet place for intervention. There are three rooms. One room is set up for more active play, another is for younger children who can sit at a table for at least part of the session, and the third room is for older children. Several children are seen at their home or daycare/preschool; however, the distance and number are limited.
As the owner and sole provider of speech & language therapy services, I have the opportunity to work with children and parent’s one-on-one. It is exciting to collaborate with the parents, and show them exactly how to continue skill practice at home. Many of my new clients are referrals from past clients. Other referrals come from doctors, insurance companies, and other community personnel.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Mostly, it has been a good experience. The first year had fairly slow growth, but I planned financially for that, and the time helped me learn the business aspect of running a therapy clinic. My first experience with a Credit Card Service was awful; however, I was able to get the high “hidden” charges reduced and cancel the contract. There have also been some bumps with insurance. The problems have been such a small part of the experience.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Communication Spot – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The Communication Spot, LLC provides speech & language evaluations and therapy. It is a pediatric service provider, serving toddlers -18 years. Occasionally, I provide services for young adults, if they have an existing evaluation.
Areas served:
Articulation/phonological speech disorders- speech sound development
Fluency- stuttering and related disorders
Voice & Resonance- hoarseness/pitch/nasality
Language Disorders- listening skills, reading related skills, grammar, understanding and using words to communicate, and understanding and using social language.
Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC)- alternate means of communication, such as picture cards or electronic devices.
I am most proud of working with parents to correct areas of concern and/or give the child communication skills to improve their life. It is exciting to see a child who is concerned about his/her speech or unable to communicate effectively begin to blossom and be able to express needs, wants, ideas, and feelings.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Because going to the clinic is like play to me, I plan on continuing for many more years. I have no desire to be an administrator, so The Communication Spot, LLC will remain a solo practice.
