Meet Mickena Kendricks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mickena Kendricks.

Mickena, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was working in the school system prior to changing paths. I knew there was more to life so I decided to try this thing called “insurance” out. In 2014, I accepted a position as a insurance agent for a local Statefarm agency. This opportunity allowed me to learn about the customer service and policy & procedures components of providing insurance. After working in that local office, I was presented with an offer to become an office manager at another local office in which I became the acting agent. It was through this experience where I learned more about the administrative, operational, and financial aspects of insurance agency ownership. After praying, I stepped out on faith and decided to work for myself. I became the first African American Female in my town to open a Captive Insurance Agency (Farmer’s Insurance). After working with Farmers for two years, I then decided to become an independent agent which offers coverage from more than 20 plus insurance carriers.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has not been smooth, I had to overcome fear, racism, and myself. I had to realize the being in business is not about being busy but being effective and productive. I lost myself along the journey a couple of times by being fearful of failure. I had to decide if will I stop or will I strive to the end.

Please tell us about Mickena Kendricks Agency.
I offer Insurance coverage and training for over 20 insurance companies. I specialize in auto, home, commercial, health, life, boat, and business insurance. I also offer the 40-hour course that is required to obtain your Georgia Insurance Licenses. The thing that I am most proud of about my company is that I am still here. Allowing my community and my black girls to see black girl magic within the home team. What set me apart from other companies is that you will not leave without me finding a fit for you. We can write any and mostly all customers.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would enjoy the life lesson more instead of trying to rush through them. I would take my husband’s advice that you can’t save the world but you can share the world.
