Meet MiMi Thomas of MiMiDaBarber in Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to MiMi Thomas.

Thanks for sharing your story with us MiMi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My name is MiMi Thomas. I’m 25 years old and I’m from a small city outside of Tallahassee Florida called Quincy. I grew up with both parents, a brother and sister. My mom is German and my dad is African American.

I started cutting hair at 14 years old. I use to cut neighbor kids and family members throughout the years. New Years of 2012 at 19 years old I was put into a medically induced coma for a week due to pneumonia. When I woke up I realized life was to short to continue working and not being happy with what I was doing so I looked into going to barber school.

I had to work to support my household for a while but then I actually enrolled in school. I started September 2013 and graduate August 5, 2014. November of 2014 I moved to Metro Atlanta and started working in a shop January 2015. I’ve worked at Barber’s 4 Days every since. There have been days where I would come in and cut no one but I knew with patience and consistency I would make it out of that. Here I am with a pretty good barbering career that’s still growing.

I plan to open my own shop in the future but I’m just focusing on getting my name known and branding myself right now. This is my passion and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I work hard and push myself for my family and to make sure my son’s future is bright.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not there was plenty of days where I questioned myself if this was the right decision for me to be here in another state starting over but I never gave up. Within the 1st month of moving I caught the flu with caused my asthma to act up giving my pneumonia again. This time I was pregnant and they didn’t want to sedate me. While I was in the hospital my apartment complex filed for eviction but once I was discharged from the hospital I handled my business and continued on this journey in Georgia

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m known as a barber. I transform men and kids haircuts and provide them with the best service I can provide. I’m punctual and I’ve been told I make the clients feel “at home”. I give the utmost respect to everyone. I think I set myself apart from others by actually giving clients what they want. I suggest what I feel as a hair professional is best for them. I’m also a listening ear to them. I support clients that are trying to do music, art, etc. I take them in as they’re family.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was called the “Family clown”. I love to have fun and see people happy. So I’d do crazy dance moves or make jokes to keep a good vibe around. I played basketball and volleyball in school. Some people call me an overachiever or a perfectionist because I’m always trying to do better and be better.
