Meet Natalie Alexander of Healing Grace Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Alexander.

Natalie Alexander

Hi Natalie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
There are so many aspects of my story. It all started when I was born in the 1970s to Haitian immigrant parents in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Afterward, a brother and a sister were born. When I was 18, I was introduced to my older brother. My parents highly valued education and marriage. That said, my focus growing up was on academic excellence and, at some point later in life, marriage. My home life was void of warmth and laughter. I was unsure what career to pursue until I was in my thirties after being married with two children. I was inspired to become a mental health therapist after realizing that people were drawn to my gift of empathy and problem-solving; after several years as a provider in Huntsville, Alabama, I moved to Kennesaw, Georgia, just before the Pandemic. My caseload grew with married couples who were experiencing infidelity and wanted to repair their relationship. Since the pandemic, I divorced and learned significant life lessons as I healed, which informed my new passion for couples and families. I serve the community by providing virtual and face-to-face therapy sessions, and I co-parent successfully as I navigate my healing journey toward life and well-being.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Just before staring my practicum, the house that my co-parent and I built and moved into with our small children was foreclosed because of the 2008 recession. There were financial difficulties and marital problems.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
It was founded in 2013 in Huntsville, Alabama., where I attended a church and noticed that many of the members did not have a mental health resource. I was inspired to provide that service to the members and proposed it to the Pastor at that time, Pastor James Doggette Sr. He was gracious enough to provide a space for me to start. Since then, I have served adjudicated juvenile boys in a residential facility. I realized that without addressing the familial issues, those boys would recidivate. I then opened up my private practice in 2016, serving all age groups until 2019, when most of my caseload was couples. I no longer serve children or adolescents. My brand embraces the spirit of knowing and intuition, which is most helpful in my mental health services.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Attend workshops that specialize in your area of interest. Know that your interests might change through growth and learning. Finding a mentor is about identifying someone who reflects the version of yourself you strive to become. Clear communication skills are necessary. Be bold and ask for what you want. Be open to learning and making mistakes. This is how growing with a mentor happens.
