Meet Nichole Jack of The Kings Donuts Coffee and More in Fairburn /South Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nichole Jack.

Nichole, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
This journey started five years ago. I joined a team of individuals who had crafted this idea of starting a business that would bring jobs to the local area and give back to other deserving souls around the world. Making donuts fresh from scratch everyday was not something anyone on the team had done before, which meant it was a lot of work but everyone was up to the challenge. At the time, there was no other shop of this kind in the area.

Almost a year after opening and after many staff and management changes, I found myself coming to work with no direction, no supervision. Just the motivation to keep everyone employed. What started as a 3/4 person operated kitchen, now was down to just myself. The option was to allow the business to close down and find something else to do or keep going…

I kept going because I didn’t want to see the employees without a job. I kept going because I discovered that I LOVED what I was doing. The customers LOVED what we were providing and honestly, I LOVED the beautiful space that we operated in. So much work had been put into this place. and in this space I was free to create anything I wanted to. Upon opening, I was just days removed from burying my grandmother who had passed after suffering from Alzheimer’s and fresh out of a relationship gone bad… This job was therapeutic, this job was needed for my soul to heal. I kept going because so many said I couldn’t do it… I believed I could. The Kings Donuts closed out the first year of operations with myself as the baker. I walked into year two as the sole owner/baker.

Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth road… furthest thing from it. Every business has struggles. Some of the biggest ones for me came in the form of equipment failure and staffing support. Commercial restaurant equipment is expensive to purchase and expensive to maintain. Many times, major pieces of equipment when fail.. in the middle of using it. At times, it would cause the business to have to close for the day or close for days if parts had to be ordered. being closed for any amount of time for a small business is challenging. In addition to the lost revenue, you deal with the backlash from customers who can’t seem to understand why you had to close. They use the opportunity to bash your inability to remain open versus empathy for a quick return. Being the sole operator also takes a toll on you physically. There have been times when I have pushed myself to the max, whether it be with the flu or some other ailment. When I can’t work, the doors close until I am well.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Kings Donuts & Coffee specializes in made fresh daily donuts and pastries. We pride ourselves on our vast variety of gourmet doughnut options. Not just your typical glazed and chocolate iced. I believe customers have taken an extremely liking to our version of the Kronut, which is a cross between a croissant and a donut. Our cinnamon rolls the size of Mt. Rushmore are also pretty heavenly.

There are many donut shops across the city. Once you walk into our facility decorated in its majestic way, you fall in love with the atmosphere. I have some of the best baristas around. They make every customer feel at home and keep coming back. Aside from a great product that has managed to be crafted behind these walls, the level of customer service we provide is unmatched.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, success is defined by continuing to show up each day in spite of all the challenges. Success is defined by the energy I receive from the customers. Knowing they keep coming back when they clearly have choices is the biggest reward. When a customer wants you and your product at their most precious family moments such as weddings and baby showers, that signifies a job well done.
