Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Mattison.
Nicole, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been told more times than not, that I don’t look like what I’ve been through. I always smile and immediately thank God for all of my blessings, and trials. I’m thankful for my trials because they made me the trailblazer that I am today. I am a 29 year old, wife, model, marketing manager, and entrepreneur. I met the love of my life in my senior year of college and he has been my best friend ever since. I started modeling in my sophomore year of college, after always being told, “you look like a model”. I figured I should give it a try. After I booked first photo shoot and fashion show, I felt like I was home, and where I was meant to be. When I get on set of a shoot, there’s a switch that goes off and I feel fierce, confident and free. I received my degree in Marketing & Public Relations at Western Michigan University. I have always had a niche for the marketing and advertising industry, so to love my day job is an also a blessing. I help clients with their branding, marketing strategy and campaign management. My business partner and husband, started our own fitness company called Mattison Muscle. We currently have five clients that we are working with. We didn’t want to make the mistake and grow too fast, so we will be taking on new clients very soon!
Now, I will turn back the clock. I was born and raised in Lansing MI. I am the oldest sibling of five and extremely family oriented. My mother was only 14 years old when she gave birth to me and my father was absent. This was then a result of a pretty rough childhood. I grew up fairly quickly to help take care of my siblings. I love to joke around, have fun, amusement parks, being outdoors and traveling. I believe this is a result of me not being about to do those things as a child.
I was the first in my immediate family to obtain a high-school diploma AND a bachelor’s degree. I say this with pride and joy because I have always wanted to be a good example for my siblings. After college, I knew I wanted to move out of Michigan and see the world. In April of 2017, I moved to Georgia and it opened my eyes to my comfort zones. I realized living in Michigan was a comfort zone and I wanted to grow outside of just that. A little while after moving to GA, I obtained my prior position. I was fortunate enough to travel globally as an Assistant Brand Manager for a major hair company. This job also lit a fire within me to always strive to be better and work hard. I knew I wanted to accomplish more of my goals and not work for someone else for years to come.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was nowhere near a smooth road and I’m not sure I wanted it to be. Pressure makes diamonds, and although I’m considered to be sweet and outgoing, there is a hustler in me that was born within my struggles. I think the biggest challenge that I face right now is the fear of the unknown. While we are in a world-wide pandemic, I am always eager to plan my next steps very carefully.
I never knew what the future held, but now it seems a little scarier. I have hope that we as a people will over-come this pandemic, although I feel the “normal” that we all new is fading away. I look forward to when I can book photo-shoots and gain new fitness clients again. I look forward to when there is at least a small sign of normalcy.
Please tell us about your work.
Mattison Muscle is a business that I Co-own with my husband. We believe it’s important for us to have our own identities as a married couple, although we wanted to have a business together as well. We enjoy working out together and its apart of our everyday life. We help people lose weight or gain muscle, depending on the client’s goals. We do free virtual consultations, to create a customized fitness and meal plan.
I am also signed to HOP Models, in Atlanta, GA. This was a huge goal of mine and I am excited to start modeling in person again. I have booked a few virtual campaigns, but there’s nothing like walking into a studio and flirting with the camera. I truly believe that there is power in the tongue, so I will speak that my next goal is to book a cover of a magazine. I am a fitness, life-style and beauty model, and would love to be featured in a magazine who featured any of those areas.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I plan to keep working towards my modeling and fitness goals. I aim to workout four to five times per week, and book major modeling deals. I plan to continue to travel the world and excel in my marketing career. I plan to continue to date my husband and make memories for years to come. There are no big changes, BUT my husband and I are disusing when we want to start our family. It’s a tough decision, although we are going to plan for it as much as we can. We both come from tough backgrounds and want to make sure we give our children everything we never had.
I’ve started a new habit, where if I catch myself complain about anything. I turnaround thank God for that exact thing. For example, if I complain about going to work, I thank God that I have a job. If I complain about not wanting to cook dinner, I thank God that I have food. So, I plan to count my blessings, live in my purpose and make a difference anyway I can.
